Definitions
- Wind turbine rotor blade arrangement The invention concerns a wind turbine rotor blade arrangement and a corresponding method for manufacturing such an arrangement .
- wind turbine rotor blades are made of fibre rein- forced plastic composite material. This is why wind turbine rotor blades and in particular those of offshore wind tur ⁇ bines are specially affected by wear which occurs where in ⁇ teracting with particles or droplets result in degrading of their leading edge. Erosion of the leading edge of the wind turbine rotor blades may reduce the aerodynamic efficiency of the wind turbine rotor blades and the power output of the wind turbine.
- the wind turbine rotor blade arrangement comprises a wind turbine rotor blade having a leading edge, the leading edge comprising an impact zone, and a protective cover for pro- tecting the leading edge, the protective cover comprising a centerline zone.
- the protective cover is attached to the leading edge solely outside of the impact zone so to obtain an air space between the impact zone of the leading edge and the centerline zone of the protective cover.
- the corresponding method for manufacturing a wind turbine rotor blade (55) arrangement comprising the following steps of: Providing a wind turbine rotor blade (55), the wind tur ⁇ bine rotor blade (55) having a leading edge (59) , the leading edge (59) comprising an impact zone (2);
- the protective cover (3) comprising a centerline zone (5) ;
- leading edge (59) of the wind turbine rotor blade (55) is .
- the wind turbine according to the invention comprises at least one wind turbine rotor blade arrangement 10 according to the invention.
- Advantages of the invention are: • leading edge protection, especially polymer leading edge protection, without delamination from the bond to blade
- the protective cover 3 is solely adhered to an outer part of the leading edge 59, preferably in the range of an outermost third to an outermost two-thirds of the length of the wind turbine rotor blade l B iacie .

- Fig. 5 shows a part of a wind turbine rotor blade according to the invention
- a protective cover 3 especially a polymer cover, may be attached to the leading edge 59 by the sides, outside of the impact zone 2. Since there is no bond to fatigue in the impact zone 2, the cover 3 will last as long as the shell surface does, rather than failing earlier from delamination .
- the protective cover 3 can be as thin as 200 microns in the center or thicker if there is a requirement to cover existing damage.
- the material should fade or become thin outside of the impact zone 2 to blend with the airfoil.
- Hotmelt films, liquid adhesive, or simply high performance acrylic tape is sufficient for attachment.
- the forces are primarily in the impact zone 2 and press the protective cover 3 to the blade, the bonding force required to keep the pro ⁇ tective cover 3 in position is quite small.
- the shell can be created with very thin wings to blend into the airfoil and ensure no negative aerodynamic performance.
- Extrusion or injection molding can create the correct geometry with a thicker center and thin wings.

- the tower (52) contains the electrical conduits, supports the nacelle (53) , and provides access to the nacelle (53) for maintenance .

- the protective cover 3 is attached to the leading edge 59 solely outside of the impact zone 2 so to obtain an air space 1 between the impact zone 2 of the leading edge 59 and the centerline zone 5 of the protective cover 3.
- the impact zone 2 extends along the very leading edge of the wind turbine blade 55 whereas the centerline zone 5 extends along the centerline of the protective cover 3 which center- line is running in longitudinal direction L of the wind tur ⁇ bine blade 55.
- the air space 1 refers to a distance or an air gap between the leading edge 59 and the protective cover 3 where no bond- ing material is present.

- the protective cover 3 is fastened to the leading edge of the blade 55. It may cover the whole length lei ade of the leading edge 59. Since the relative speed decreases towards the root end 58 of the wind turbine rotor blade 55 when in operation, it is preferred that the protective cover 3 is only adhered to the outer part of the blade to an outer length l ou ter of the leading edge 59. Preferably, this outer length l ou ter is in the range of an outermost third to an outermost two-thirds of the blade length lei ade / wherein the term blade length re ⁇ fers to the length of the leading edge 59 of the wind turbine rotor blade 55.
