Abstract
The present invention relates to an image display device capable of effecting automatic disk space management function in case an insufficient amount of disk space is detected prior to installing a new application. The present invention relates more particularly to an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services and having Internet connectivity to access a remote database of TV applications so that a certain number of applications are installed on a local memory unit of the image display device, the image display device further comprising an electronic control unit performing automatic memory unit capacity management function.
Description
The present invention relates to an image display device capable of effecting automatic disk space management function in case an insufficient amount of disk space is detected prior to installing a new application.
Digital and interactive TV systems provide a comprehensive amount of TV channels and programs. Additionally, a vast number of smart TV applications as well as accessed Internet sites may present the user with multimedia content.
Therefore, as the image display devices today offer a versatile and wide range of functions, services as well as connectivity to the Internet, it is desirable to provide a dynamically controlled memory unit for storing a vast number of smart TV applications in a practical manner.
Among others, one of the prior art disclosures in the technical field of the present invention can be referred to as US2003163506, which relates to the field of virtual machines. US2003163506 discloses a method for transmitting methods to a client running a virtual machine, the methods contained in one or more classes, the method comprising: recursively scanning through application code beginning at an application entry point to determine which methods may be called and the classes to which they correspond; storing identifiers corresponding to the methods which may be called, in a method usage map organized by classes; receiving a request for an application from a client; processing all application and library classes for the application specified by the request, removing unused methods from it as per the method usage map; and transmitting any remaining methods to the client.
The present invention provides a system and a method by which an image display device is operated such that a memory unit’s storage capacity is monitored and dynamically increased in case additional applications are intended to be installed.
The present invention therefore provides a system and method by which an image display device is operable to monitor and increase a memory unit’s storage capacity in an image display device as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system and method by which an image display device allows installation of additional applications in the event that a respective memory unit’s storage capacity is insufficient and automatically provides additional space without losing user-sensitive data.
The present invention proposes an image display device with Internet connectivity so as to access a remote database of TV applications. The user can therefore install as many applications as desired depending on the size of a local memory unit of the image display device. Typically, an electronic control unit of the image display device performs automatic memory unit capacity management function in the manner that the memory unit’s storage capacity storing a plurality of applications is managed to selectively open additional space by automatically uninstalling unused applications to install more applications.
According to the present invention, the electronic control unit continuously or regularly monitors size of the available storage capacity of the memory unit and dynamically updates installed smart TV applications whose usage frequency is lower compared to other applications having more frequent accesses. Therefore, the electronic control unit has access to an updated list of installed applications with usage frequency statistics.
In the event that no memory unit capacity is available for installing a new application as intended by the user, the electronic control unit automatically uninstalls the least used application prior to the installation of the new application. During this stage, no information is provided to the user and the least used application is automatically uninstalled to free up storage space. However, any metadata elements such as shortcuts, icons, descriptions, background images, covers, which might also include xml files and/or media files, are not deleted and the uninstalled application is not removed from the list of installed accessible applications. This is advantageous in that while additional space is created to perform the installation procedure as executed by the user, the uninstalled application is maintained to remain accessible at any time.
To this end, the present invention ensures that metadata elements indicating that an already uninstalled application is in installed state are preserved. If an uninstalled application is intended to be run, the image display device automatically accesses the remote database of TV applications and reinstalls the uninstalled application.
It is to be noted that the users can manually activate or deactivate the automatic memory unit capacity management function of the image display device or create a manually configured exclusion list of applications that are not allowed to be uninstalled for the purpose of freeing up memory unit space.
Further, the electronic control unit of the image display device records the specific link and database location of an uninstalled application in the remote database of TV applications to easily access the source files thereof if and when needed.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in the claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes a first step of the method of increasing memory unit capacity according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 demonstrates a general diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes a second step of the method of increasing memory unit capacity according to the present invention.
The present invention proposes an image display device which is operated in a manner that a memory unit’s storage capacity storing a plurality of applications is managed to selectively open additional space to install more applications. More particularly, the present invention provides that an image display device automatically manages a memory unit’s storage capacity such that unused applications are automatically uninstalled as will be delineated hereinafter.
Digital and interactive TV systems provide a comprehensive amount of TV channels and programs while a vast number of smart TV applications offer a versatile and wide range of functions and services such as games, news portals and many other services streaming music or movies on demand, social network applications etc. A smart TV with Internet connectivity typically accesses a remote database of smart TV applications so that a certain number of applications can be installed on the local memory unit of the image display device, typically in the form of a flash memory device. As the number of installed applications simultaneously stored on the memory unit is directly proportional to the storage capacity thereof, the user may from time to time encounter a screen message informing that the disk space is insufficient, in which case the user is asked to free up disk space by uninstalling unwanted applications.
According to the present invention, an electronic control unit of the image display device continuously monitors the remaining storage capacity of the memory unit and determines applications whose usage frequency is lower compared to other applications having more frequent accesses. To this end, in case the user attempts to install a new application and no more memory unit capacity is available, the electronic control unit automatically determines the least used applications and automatically uninstall such applications to free up memory capacity. The freed disk space is used for installation of the new application as initiated by the user. However, when the least used application is being uninstalled, user-sensitive data including the metadata elements such as shortcuts, icons, descriptions, background images, covers, which might also include xml files and/or media files are not deleted nor is the uninstalled application removed from the list of installed applications. Therefore, any metadata elements indicating that an already uninstalled application is still in installed state are preserved while the uninstalled program provides extra disk space on the memory unit for storing a new application as configured to be installed by the user. As is known to the skilled reader, metadata elements that are not deleted do not occupy considerable space on the memory unit.
It is to be noted that the least used application being uninstalled only serves to the purpose of increasing memory capacity so that a currently more desired application can be installed. On the other hand, as the metadata elements including shortcuts and icons are maintained, the user is still able to run the uninstalled application, in which case the image display device will automatically immediately access the remote database and install the same.
It is further to be noted that since the uninstalled application is replaced by a more preferential application, while the latter application can be installed, access to the earlier application being still possible, no breach of user-defined or user-configured application installation choices is in question. According to the invention, the user may manually configure activation or deactivation of the automatic memory unit capacity management function of the image display device according to his will.
To this end, the present invention ensures that an application of interest can be installed in spite of the fact that no sufficient memory capacity is available. In this case, the electronic control unit continuously monitoring usage statistics in relation with each and every application installed on the memory unit determines less preferential applications that are to be temporarily uninstalled in case more preferential applications are needed to be installed.
According to an alternative embodiment of the present invention, the user may create an exclusion list to specify applications that will not be uninstalled for freeing up memory space. For instance, the user can specify a certain number of applications that are normally expected to be used on a less frequent basis but yet prove to remain immediately accessible when needed.
It is to be noted that the electronic control unit may effectuate uninstalling of a third application for freeing up memory unit space to reinstall an already uninstalled first application which was replaced by a second application. In this case, the electronic control unit adds the reinstalled first application to the list of excluded applications.
In summary, the present invention proposes an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services and having Internet connectivity to access a remote database of TV applications so that a certain number of applications are installed on a local memory unit of the image display device, the image display device further comprising an electronic control unit performing automatic memory unit capacity management function.
In one embodiment of the invention, the electronic control unit of the image display device continuously monitors available storage capacity of the memory unit and determines applications whose usage frequency is lower compared to other applications having more frequent accesses.
In a further embodiment of the invention, in case no memory unit capacity is available for installing a new application, the electronic control unit automatically determines and uninstalls the least used application prior to the installation of the new application such that metadata elements are not deleted and the uninstalled application is not removed from the list of installed accessible applications, whereby the image display device is operated in a manner that the memory unit’s storage capacity storing a plurality of applications is managed to selectively open additional space by automatically uninstalling unused applications to install more applications.
In a further embodiment of the invention, metadata elements indicating that an already uninstalled application is in installed state are preserved.
In a further embodiment of the invention, when an uninstalled application is run, the image display device automatically accesses the remote database of TV applications and reinstalls the uninstalled application.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the automatic memory unit capacity management function of the image display device is manually configurable to be activated or deactivated.
In a further embodiment of the invention, a manually configured exclusion list of applications specifies applications that are uninstallable for freeing up memory unit space.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the electronic control unit records the specific link and database location including the id number of an uninstalled application to later access the same application’s source files in the remote database of TV applications.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the electronic control unit automatically adds an application being reinstalled after being uninstalled to the exclusion list of applications. Although statistically less used, the reinstalled application therefore proving to be maintained in installed state, the electronic control unit, in case of superposition, assigns the next least used application for uninstallation when needed.
In this regard, the present invention advantageously ensures that while additional space is created to perform the installation procedure as executed by the user, the uninstalled application is maintained to remain accessible at any time. If and when needed, the image display device automatically accesses the remote database of TV applications and reinstalls the uninstalled application. It further records the specific link and database location to more easily access the uninstalled content.
