Description

COVER FOR A PRINTING DEVICE AND MECHANISM THEREOF
The present invention relates to a hinged cover mechanism for a printing device and more specifically to a cover mechanism allowing fixation of the cover at a maximum opening angle.
Cover mechanisms having a conventional hinge mechanism are widely known and practiced. Such cover mechanisms are used for instance in printing devices such as printers, cash registers, credit card terminals etc. and many others having printing capabilities and therefore are required to be fed with paper in appropriate compartments closed by said covers.
Printers for printing information on paper rolls are widely used with POS terminals, and the ability to easily load and replace paper rolls in such printers is accordingly important. As such printing devices require regular paper feed during prolonged operation, paper storage compartments are regularly opened and a new paper roll is accordingly loaded. Therefore, for easy operation of loading a paper roll, the design of the paper compartment cover and the means provided to the user for easy operation are important to the quality of the product.
A prior art patent publication relevant in the field of the present invention may be referred to as US2007172289, which discloses a paper compartment cover locked with a housing for a printer comprising a flexible arm having one end fixed to the housing, a top cover pivoted on the flexible arm and locked with the housing, a lever shaft supported on the top cover to slide in relation to the top cover and a lever pivotally mounted on the lever shaft. The disclosure of US2007172289 provides a paper compartment cover which carries the roller such that the opening of the cover is able to remove the platen from the thermal printer mechanism.
The present invention provides a printing device paper compartment cover as defined in the characterizing portion of Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a printing device paper compartment cover which can be locked at a maximum opening angle.
The present invention proposes a printing device paper compartment cover. Said cover has at least one arm pivotally secured to a housing part of said printing device. Said at least one arm of said cover has a cover lock opening with which a first part of a cover locking element engages. In this configuration, a second part at the other end of said cover locking element contacts a lowered surface portion provided on said housing part.
Said second part is a tubular body whose base fits into a cover lock slot on said lowered surface. Said cover lock slot is a part of said lowered surface but has a semi-circular edge. Said lowered surface also contains a rotation shaft slot.
Said cover lock opening as well as said first part of said cover locking element corresponding to said cover lock opening do not have uniform and symmetrical shapes. The orientation of the cover lock opening with the upper portion being more enlarged is not significantly changed during the entire opening action of the cover, said first part therefore remains interlocked with said opening.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying the printing device paper compartment cover of the present invention whose advantages were outlined above and will be explained hereinafter in brief.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.

Fig. 2 demonstrates a general perspective view of a printing device upper part having a paper compartment cover in opened position according to the present invention.
Fig. 3 demonstrates another perspective view of a printing device upper part with a paper compartment cover in opened position according to the present invention.

Fig. 6 demonstrates a perspective view of the paper compartment with disassembled elements according to the present invention.
Fig. 7a to 7c demonstrates general perspective views of the position of the cover locking element according to the present invention. While, Fig. 7b demonstrates the moment just before locking of the cover, the subsequent locked position is seen in Fig. 7c.
Fig. 8 demonstrates a general perspective view of the paper compartment of the printing device with the cover being not mounted.
Fig. 9 demonstrates the enlarged detail as seen encircled in Fig. 8.
Referring now to the figure outlined above, the present invention proposes a printing device paper compartment cover as defined in Claim 1.
The following numerals are assigned to different parts demonstrated in the drawings:
(1) Printing device
(2) Paper compartment cover
(3) Cover locking element
(4) First part
(5) Second part
(6) Cover rotation shaft
(7) Cover lock opening
(8) Lowered surface
(9) Cover lock slot
(10) Rotation shaft slot
(11) Cover arm
(12) Housing part
(13) Cover limiting part
The present invention proposes a printing device (1) comprising a paper compartment for storing a paper roll and a paper compartment cover (2) for closing said paper compartment. Said paper compartment may typically store a paper roll as in the case of POS terminals. The printing device (1) also comprises a cover limiting part (13) for stopping the paper compartment cover (2) at a predetermined opening angle.
The paper compartment cover (2) has at least one cover arm (11) rotatably mounted around a cover rotation shaft (6) secured to a housing part (12) of said printing device (1). Said paper compartment cover (2) preferably has two cover arms (11) rotatably mounted around said cover rotation shaft (6).
The cover arm (11) of said paper compartment cover (2) comprises a cover locking element (3) and a cover lock opening (7) into which a first part (4) of a cover locking element (3) is insertable. A second part (5) of said cover locking element (3) is, on the other hand, configured to contact and move on a lowered surface (8) provided on the housing part (12) of said printing device (1) during opening and closing of the paper compartment cover (2) by user.
The second part (5) of said cover locking element (3) is designed in the form of a cylindrical body with a base. This cylindrical body of the cover locking element (3) with its base is designed dimensionally corresponding to a cover lock slot (9) on said lowered surface (8) of the housing part (12) (Fig. 8, Fig. 9). The cover lock slot (9) is shaped as a delimited semi-circular portion forming part of said lowered surface (8). The lowered surface (8) provided on said housing part (12) therefore comprises the lock slot (9) into which the base of said cylindrical body of the second part (5) is seated at the final stage of the opening of the paper compartment cover (2) relative to the printing device (1).
The second part (5) maintains a contact relationship at its base with said lowered surface (8) during opening of the paper compartment cover (2). At the end of the opening operation, however, the base of the second part (5) reaches said cover lock slot (9) and the maximum opened position of the paper compartment cover (2) is maintained by way of the second part’s (5) cylindrical body being seated in the lock slot (9). This locked position of the paper compartment cover (2) can easily be released by manually displacing the paper compartment cover (2) so as to free the second part (5) base from the cover lock slot (9). Additionaly, the lowered surface (8) comprises a rotation shaft slot (10) for receiving the cover rotation shaft (6).
The first part (4) of said cover locking element (3) has an asymmetrical shape around its center of gravity. The cover lock opening (7) into which the first part (4) of said cover locking element (3) is insertable has also an asymmetrical shape, which is corresponding to the shape of said first part (4). Said first part (4) of said cover locking element’s (3) orientation under gravity is physically unfitting to the shape of said cover lock opening (7) during displacement of the cover arm (11) while opening of the paper compartment cover (2). In other words, during the opening operation of the paper compartment cover (2), the first part (4) of said cover locking element (3) cannot pass through the cover lock opening (7) such as to be released due to the orientation of said first part (4) under gravity and the geometry of the cover lock opening (7) continually having an enlarged upper portion during its displacement.
The first part (4) of said cover locking element (3) is in the form of two linear sections divided by a turn. Preferably, the first part (4) of the cover locking element (3) is designed as an L-shape.
In the present invention, the cover locking element (3) with an L shaped first part (4) and cylindrical second part (5) provides fixing of the paper compartment cover (2) at the maximum opened position of the opening of the paper compartment cover (2) relative to the printing device (1). The paper compartment cover (2) is not allowed to fall on the printing device (1) by the cover locking element (3) during loading of the paper roll to the paper compartment.
