Abstract

Determining tissue properties by optical sensing includes applying an optical signal to input locations on a surface a body; sensing transmission through the body of the optical signal at an output location on the surface of the body, each input location being separated from the output location by a separation distance along the surface of the body; determining a transmission characteristic from each of the input locations to the output location of the optical signal; applying a computer implemented procedure to process the determined transmission characteristic to determine parameters characterizing two tissue layers below the surface of the body, the layers including an inner and an outer layer between the inner layer and the surface of the body, the parameters characterizing optical properties of the inner layer; and using the parameters characterizing the optical properties of the inner layer to determine a metabolic characteristic of tissue in the layer.
