Abstract

This invention relates to a fuel monitoring system and method and more particularly, to a fuel monitoring system and method for monitoring the fuel consumption of vehicles in a fleet of vehicles. The method includes the steps of: - receiving at a base station, from a vehicle, fuel tank fuel quantity information prior to a refuelling event; - receiving at the base station, from the vehicle, fuel tank fuel quantity information after a refuelling event; - calculating a fuel tank fuel receipt quantity from the fuel tank fuel quantity information received from the vehicle prior to and after the refuelling event; - receiving from a second source a dispensed fuel quantity relating to the quantity of fuel dispensed for the re-fuelling event; - comparing the fuel tank fuel receipt quantity with the dispensed fuel quantity; and - authorising a payment for the re-fuelling event if the fuel tank fuel receipt quantity is equal to or within a predetermined range of difference of the dispensed fuel quantity.
