Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a process of filling an intragastric balloon placed into the stomach of a patient for the treatment of overweight or obesity.
  • a soft balloon For the treatment of obesity or overweight into the stomach of a patient endoscopically is introduced a soft balloon. Introduced into the stomach is a probe with the balloon which when placed in the stomach is filled with saline or seldom with air. The material of which the balloon is made is resistant to gastric juices. The balloon is left in the stomach of the patient for up to 6 or 12 months. After the placement of a balloon the patient receives individual guidance on nutrition and diet. A balloon partially filling the stomach causes a feeling of satiety after eating less food.
  • a balloon placed in the stomach is resistant to gastric contents. However, sometimes there is a risk of a balloon damage and deflation. In this case the patient should immediately contact a doctor to remove the remains of the balloon and to avoid a possible intestinal obstruction.
  • the method consists of filling the intragastric balloon with air or saline combined with a fragrance marker.
  • the balloon inflates with saline and gas, usually air, and afterwards the fragrance marker is given to the balloon. Then at 400-700 ml of saline 50-150 cm 3 of air at atmospheric pressure is introduced into the balloon.
  • Fragrance marker is chosen such that it is soluble in physiological saline.
  • the best markers used are peppermint flavor with density at 20° C of 0,943- 1 ,003 g / cm 3 or eucalyptus-mint flavor with density at 20° C of 0,821 g / cm 3 in the amount of 2-5 cm 3 .
  • the method of filling an intragastric balloon according to the invention does not alter the process of treatment of patients, however it causes the fact that the patient notices the damage of the balloon by feeling the characteristic smell of the fragrance marker used during a surgery, expelled through the mouth with air from the damaged balloon (the patient "burps" with a characteristic smell) or feels a noticeable change in urine smell.
  • the early removal of the damaged balloon and its replacement with the new one will be possible.
  • Another advantage that is achieved by the introduction of a fragrance marker is the increase of the sterility of the physiological saline.
  • the introduction of air into the balloon filled with saline solution is designed to reduce dyspeptic symptoms, occurring immediately after the placement and inflation, by reducing the pressure of the balloon to the gastric pylorus.
  • the method of filling the intragastric balloon according to the invention takes place in the following order: the balloon is inserted through the mouth into the stomach of the patient in the control of the video- endoscope, then by the syringe the balloon is filled with saline solution in the amount of 400 ml, and 50 cm 3 of the air from the operating room is added to the balloon by the same syringe, and then 2 cm 3 of peppermint flavor (or mint-eucalyptus) is injected into it.
  • the flavor is used as a natural flavoring additive to beverages and beverage concentrates.
  • the balloon is filled with physiological saline in the amount of 700 ml then it is added 150 cm 3 of air and 5 cm 3 of a marker.
