Description
HYGIENIC COVER WITH ANTIMICROBIAL OUTER SURFACE AND METHOD OF ITS MANUFACTURE
Technical area
The invention regards a hygienic cover - wrapping film with an anti-microbial treatment of the outer surface for protection of printed materials in offices, schools, public libraries and reading rooms. The invention comprises manufacturing method of this wrapping film.
Current situation
Surfaces of objects that serve to many different people are quickly contaminated with bacteria which subsequently spread diseases, allergies, etc.
Surfaces of books in public libraries, wrapping of school notebooks, textbooks, objects in public lending offices can serve as a concrete example. This problem does not occur only in standard single-use plastic wrapping.
The above-mentioned method can solve problems with mass usage of objects by covering them with a plastic cover, either permanent (e.g. a plastic layer for books) or removable. It protects object against dirt and mechanical damage, or provides passive protection against contamination by disinfectants caused by cleaning. An active solution of anti-microbial protection of the outer surface of wrapping film with a permanent antimicrobial agent, however, has been unknown and unused.
Anti-microbial additives are currently used only in food and medical application with an emphasis on anti-microbial activity of the inner surface clinging to the wrapped object. A film for wrapping food according to the patent application PCT WO 2010/057658 can serve as a concrete example. This film is made of LDPE, PLA or PCL and these materials contain lysozyme, thymol or lemon extract as anti-microbial additives.
The opaque, tinted, biaxially oriented and partially crystalline wrapping film according to the German patent application 10105110 is from 100 to 500 microns thick and contains 2,4,4 '-trichloride-2'-hydroxy-difenylether (Triclosan), or other anti-microbial substances as anti-microbial additives.
The single or multi-layer, transparent, biaxially oriented anti-microbial film for wrapping and medical application according to a German patent application 10105108 - also contains 2,4,4 ,-trichloride-2'-hydroxy-difenylether as an anti-microbial additive.
The amorphous transparent, or coloured films 30 - 1,000 microns according to a series of German patent applications 10101902, 10101903, 10101904, 10101906 and a white film saturated with barium sulphate according to a German patent application 10100704 and 0100705 contain the same anti-microbial additive.
The polyester wrapping film according to a Japanese patent application 10330603 contains 0.1 - 3 % of anti-microbial additive based on a combination of metal oxides (Zn, Cu, Mg, Ca).
As mentioned before, none of the above quoted known solutions focuses on active anti-microbial protection of the outer surface of the wrapping film with a permanent antimicrobial agent.
Principle of the invention
A hygienic wrapping film with an anti-microbial treatment of the outer surface according to the invention contributes to elimination of the mentioned shortcoming. This hygienic wrapping film comprises a basic surface structure based on a single or multilayer polymer film covered with a single or multi-layer of print, out of which at least one layer contains an anti-microbial agent and the thickness of the layer with anti-microbial activity does not exceed 0.01 mm.
The anti-bacterial agent of the surface print layer can be a substance containing silver ions or a substance containing volatile oils of selected natural substances such as thyme, oregano, cinnamon, clove, rosemary or fennel.
The polymer material of the basic film is selected from a group of polyolefins, mainly PE and PP, their copolymers, mainly ethyl vinyl acetate, ethyl methacrylate, ethyl butyl acrylate and ionomer, biopolymers, mainly polylactic acid (PLA) and modified starches.
The production process of making the hygienic wrapping film with an anti-microbial treatment of the outer surface initially involves a standard plastic making process, such as rolling or blowing, which produces a polymer film of a basic flat structure. The invention is based on printing of a polymer film with a single or multiple layer on one side; at least one of these layers weighs 4-8 g/m and 1-5 g/m of dry matter contains an anti-microbial agent.
From thus treated film, a wrapping film is produced in a tailor-making process where the layer containing the anti-microbial agent forms its outer layer.
The benefit of the hygienic wrapping film with an anti-microbial treatment and the manufacturing method according to the invention lies in a reliable, long-lasting anti-microbial effect of a wrapped product that can pass through many hands without a danger of infection. As the thickness of the active anti-microbial layer produced by printing is small - up to 0.01 mm, but in practice usually 0.001 - 0.002 mm, the wrapping is easily recyclable throughout its lifetime. Creation of the active surface with a print ensures that only the surface of the wrapped area is active, not the flaps or the inner surface.
