Abstract

The invention provides methods and compositions for the improved biosynthesis of ethanol in a host cell. Genes encoding enzymes for futile cycle pathways to increase ethanol production, methods of optimizing expression of these enzymes in host cells, and methods for the production of ethanol by these host cells are disclosed. Exogenous compounds for increasing ethanol productivity by the host cells are also provided.
