Description
Device and method concerning a water heater, comprising a concentric set of tubes
The present invention provides a device and a method relating to a water heater, and in which the water heater comprises a concentric set of tubes. More specifically, the invention relates to a device and a method as stated in the introducing part of claim 1 and claim 9, respectively.
A device according to the introducing part of claims 1 and 8 is formerly known from international publication No. WO 02/081978 Al, belonging to the applicant. Further prior art documents to be mentioned within the area are DE 29520053, EP 1637816 and NL 8303984.
Thus, it is known to use concentric tubes for connection of hot and cold water to a water heater.
However, there exists a need for a device and a method relating to a water heater which allow mounting of concentric tubes in the shape of a set of tubes through a single opening in the water heater, where no parts of the set of tubes are mounted before the tank of the water heater is completely manufactured, which allow simple exchange of valve or other external fittings, and where the same tank can be used for top, bottom or side mounting of the water heater.
The present invention aims at meeting one or more of the above-mentioned
requirements, by means of a device and a method as stated in the characterizing clause of claims 1 and 9, respectively.
Advantageous embodiments of the invention are stated in the dependent claims.
In the following, exemplary embodiments of the invention are described in more details by referring to the drawings, in which
Figures 1 a - c are side elevation views of one and the same water heater tank with mounting piece in lying or horizontal position and in standing or vertical positions for top and bottom mounting, respectively, of not shown sets of tubes, valves and other fittings,
figures 2 a - c are side elevation views corresponding to figs. 1 a - c, but with sets of tubes mounted within the mounting piece, figure 3 is a side elevation view, partially in cross section, of a set of tubes for use of the water heater in a horizontal position as shown in fig. 2a, figure 4 is a side elevation view, partially in cross section, of a set of tubes for top mounting by use of the water heater in a vertical position as shown in fig. 2b, figure 5 is a side elevation view, partially in cross section, of a set of tubes for bottom mounting by use of the water heater in a vertical position as shown in fig. 2c, and in which the set of tubes corresponds with the set of tubes in fig. 2, but with reversed flow directions as indicated by arrows, figure 6 is a perspective view, partially in cross section, of a set of tubes especially for use in top and bottom mounting in threaded engagement with the mounting piece of a water heater, figure 7 is a perspective view, partially in cross section, of set of tubes especially for use in vertical mounting in press or force engagement with the mounting piece of a water heater via a shoulder and flange connection and a male threaded screw in threaded engagement with the mounting piece, and figure 8 is a side elevation view, partially in cross section, of the set of tubes mounted to the mounting piece as shown in fig. 7, and in which a valve known per se is in threaded engagement with a remaining threaded portion of the mounting piece.
In some of the figures the flow direction of the water is indicated by arrows, and in which CW and HW designates cold water and hot water, respectively.
By initially referring to figures 1 and 2, one and a same water heater tank 1 with mounting piece 2 for a set 3 of tubes and a herein not shown valve or other fittings is shown in a lying or horizontal position (fig. la and fig. 2a) and in standing or vertical positions for top mounting (fig. lb and fig. 2b) and bottom mounting (fig. lc and fig. 2c), respectively, of the set 3 of tubes. The set 3 of tubes is thus not mounted until the water heater tank 1 is completely manufactured, for example completely welded with an integrated mounting piece 2 and possibly also being surface treated internally, which
thus eases manufacturing and safeguards an intact surface treatment of the tank 1. Further, by using one and the same tank 1 for horizontal mounting and for top or bottom mounting cost saving rationalization advantages are obtained.
Further, by referring to figs. 3 to 7, a set 3 of tubes for use in a water heater 10 according to the present invention is more closely shown, mounted to the mounting piece of the water heater 10, and in which the set 3 of tubes shown in fig. 3 is used for horizontal mounting of the water heater tank 1 and thus also the water heater 10.
The set 3 of tubes has, which is apparent, a concentric construction and function which is described in more details in said introductorily mentioned international publication No. WO 02/081978 Al, belonging to the applicant. The main function of the set 3 of tubes is, which will be inevitably apparent for the artisan, to supply cold water to a lower part of the water heater tank 1 and to take out hot water from an upper part of the water heater tank as there will necessarily exist a vertical thermal gradient in the water contained in the water heater tank 1 in which hot water is displaced upwardly by cold water.
According to the invention there is thus provided a device relating to a water heater 10, comprising a concentric set 3 of tubes having a longer inner channel or flow path 6 with a not shown opening which advantageously corresponds to the diameter of the channel 7 in an end of the set 3 of tubes and an outer shorter channel or flow path 7 having a number of openings 14, for mounting within a mounting piece 2 of the water heater 10, wherein the set 3 of tubes in a mounted state projects into the water heater tank 1 through the mounting piece 2 for supply of cold water CW and discharge of hot water HW to and from the water heater 10, said mounting piece being provided with a female threaded portion 8 for releasably attaching the set 3 of tubes to the water heater 10.
In the embodiment shown in details in figs. 4 and 5 the set 3 of tubes is provided .with a flange 1 1 for mating contact with a shoulder 12 of the mounting piece 2, as it is provided a male threaded nut 5 to be screwed into the threaded portion 8 into mating contact with the flange 1 1 , said flange 11 thus obtaining sealing and mating contact between the nut 5 and the shoulder 12.
In the embodiment shown in details in figs. 4 and 5, the set 3 of tubes is provided with a male threaded portion 9 for threading engagement with the female threaded portion 8 of
the mounting piece 2. Also in this embodiment is the mounting piece 2 advantageously provided with a shoulder 12, corresponding to the embodiment shown in fig. 3, to safeguard that one and the same mounting piece 2, and thus also one and the same water heater tank 1, can be used for both the above-mentioned embodiments of the set 3 of tubes.
The set 3 of tubes is, as shown in figs. 4 and 5, advantageously provided with a galvanic anode 15 of aluminium which encircles substantially the full length of the longer, inner channel 6 which is not concentrically covered by the shorter, outer channel 7, said outer diameter of the galvanic anode 15 being smaller than an inner minimum diameter of the mounting piece 2, such that the set 3 of tubes with the galvanic anode 15 may be taken out of the water heater tank 1 in a simple way after being decoupled from the mounting piece 2.
For both the shown embodiments of the flange 3 the length of the female threaded portion 8 allows for mounting of a valve 4 known per se to the mounting piece 2, in addition to, and after, mounting of the set 3 of tubes, as it is shown in fig. 8. As further shown in fig. 8, the valve 4 is advantageously mounted into thread engagement with a remaining threaded portion 8' of the mounting piece 2 after mounting said set 3 of tubes. At a later demounting of the valve 4 the set 3 of tubes will not follow if this is not desirable. If there should also be desirable to demount the set 3 of tubes, the nut 3 is screwed out whereupon the set 3 of tubes is taken out.
The mounting piece 2 is advantageously eccentrically arranged on the water heater 10 in relation to a centre axis C of the water heater 10 and with one and the same positioning on the water heater 10 either the water heater 10 is used horizontally, vertically with a top mounted arrangement of the set 3 of tubes or vertically with a bottom mounted arrangement of the set 3 of tubes. An eccentrically arranged mounting piece 2 is particularly desirable when the water heater 10 is horizontally arranged, in order to safeguard a low position of the supply of cold water CW to the water heater tank 1.
For top and bottom mounting identical sets 3 of tubes are advantageously used, which is particularly shown in figs. 4 and 5, and in which, by top mounting, the inner, longer channel or flow path 6 of the set of tubes is leading cold water CW into the water heater 10 and the shorter, outer channel or flow path 7 of the set of tubes is leading hot water HW out of the water heater 10, and the opposite by bottom mounting in such a way which is indicated by arrows in said figures. As the flow paths of the water though the
set 3 of tubes are opposite by top and bottom mounting, different valves 4 adapted to this should be used in the two cases.
For a lying or horizontal water heater a set 3 of tubes with a function which
substantially corresponds to the one by bottom mounting is advantageously used, but in which the set 3 of tubes has a curved shape for fixing the outer end of the set 3 of tubes for the outlet of hot water HW in an upper part of the lying water heater 10, and with the eccentrically arranged mounting piece 2, and thus also the supply of cold water CW, in a lower part of the horizontal water heater 10, wherein the screw 5 is tightened for correct fixation of the curved set 3 of tubes in the mounting piece 2 and such that unwanted rotation of the curved set 3 of tubes is thus avoided when tightening.
The inner perimeter surface of the male threaded nut 5 is advantageously provided with a hexagonal track 13 for use of a suitable tool when tightening said nut 5.
