Abstract

A security post is provided comprising an outer tube (10), an inner tube (12), and a central core (11), there being a spacing between the outer tube and the inner tube and a spacing between the inner tube and the central core. In one embodiment the core comprises a solid post and the inner tube and core are a loose fit within the outer tube. The security post may comprise a security device, for example a bollard, and using the construction of the invention provides a bollard having the necessary strength and resistance to halt or deflect a vehicle, without necessarily applying a sever reactive force to the vehicle, which force might cause severe injury to occupants of the vehicle.

Description

SECURITY POSTS
The invention relates to security posts. One known example of a security post comprises a security bollard for use in protecting buildings, people etc from being struck by a vehicle. Such bollards have to be of sophisticated construction to provide the necessary strength and resistance to halt or deflect a vehicle, without necessarily applying a severe reactive force to the vehicle, which force might cause serious injury to occupants of the vehicle.
Known security posts are not necessarily entirely effective.
The invention solves this problem by providing a particularly effective security post. The invention provides a security post comprising an outer tube, an inner tube, and a central core, there being a spacing between the outer tube and the inner tube and a spacing between the inner tube and the central core.
The central core may comprise a solid post.
There may be more than one inner tube spaced between the outer tube and the core.
According to one embodiment there are three inner tubes spaced between the outer tube and the core, and spaced from one another.
In another preferred embodiment there are five inner tubes, but other numbers are possible, depending upon the level of impact that the post is intended to resist.
Each of the inner tubes may have the same wall thickness and this wall thickness may be the same as the wall thickness of the outer tube.
In another embodiment the outer tube and the outermost inner tube have the same wall thickness, and the inner tubes having a smaller wall thickness. The outer tube is preferably attached to a base plate. An upper cap may be fitted inside the upper region of the outer tube.
The upper cap may be provided with a lifting facility, for example a tapped hole into which a lifting member, for example a hook may be screwed.
According to another preferred embodiment, the inner core, and any inner tube or tubes, is a loose fit within the outer tube.
It is preferred that all the components are of steel, but other materials or combinations of material may be used.
The spacings between the components may be taken up only with air, but in other embodiments infill materials may be used, in at least some of the spacings, including for example concrete or sand.
The security post may comprise a security device, for example a bollard, or may comprise part of a security device, for example one or more support legs of an item of street furniture including, for example, a lamp post, direction post, or a support leg for seating, cycle racks, litter bins or the like.
For use as a bollard, the security post may have added components. For example a decorative sleeve may be used to cover the outer surface of the bollard.
Specific embodiments of the invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a first embodiment of a security post according to the invention; Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view on line A-A of Figure 1 ;
Figure 3 is a detailed cross-sectional view of area B of Figure 2; Figure 4 is a detailed cross-sectional view of area C of Figure 2; Figure 5 is a side view of a second embodiment of a security post according to the invention;
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view on line A-A of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a detailed cross-sectional view of area B of Figure 6; and
Figure 8 is a detailed cross-sectional view of area C of Figure 6. All the components of the embodiments about to be described are steel but other components may comprise or include other materials.
The security post shown in Figures 1 to 4 comprises an outer tube 10, a solid inner core 1 1 and three inner tubes 12. All these components are spaced apart from one another as best seen in Figures 3 and 4.
The outer tube 10 and inner tubes 12 can have the same or different wall thicknesses.
The outer tube 10 is welded to a base plate 13.
Welded into the upper end of the outer tube 10 is a closure cap 14.
The cap 14 has a tapped hole 15 therein so that a threaded member, such as a lifting hook, can be screwed into the hole, facilitating the positioning of the security post at its final location, which may be adjacent to a building.
In use, the base of the post will be fixed, for example by embedding the base of the post in concrete. The outer tube 10, base plate 13, and cap 14 are welded together. However the inner core 1 1 and inner tubes 12 lie loosely within the outer tube 10.
Turning now to the second embodiment of security post shown in Figures 5 to 8, this consists of a larger, heavier duty security post but like the security post of Figures 1 to 4, it includes an outer tube 10, and a solid inner core 1 1 . Unlike the first embodiment, this embodiment has five inner tubes lying between the outer tube 10 and the core 1 1 .
The outermost of the inner tubes 16 can have the same or a different wall thickness to the outer tube 10.
The other inner tubes 17 each have the same wall thickness, but this wall thickness is less than the wall thickness of the tubes 10 and 16. The outer tube 10 is provided with two collars 16, which can be used to locate a decorate sleeve (not shown) to provide a functional but aesthetically pleasing bollard.
Like the first embodiment, the second embodiment also has a base plate 13 and an upper cap 14 having a tapped hole 15.
In the event of the security posts described above being struck by a vehicle, the outer tube 10 deforms, the loose inner components move about within the outer tube 10 in a complex manner, and the interaction of the various components contributes to the stopping or deflection of the vehicle, without the application of overly significant reactive forces on the vehicle.
The tubes and cores of the above embodiments have a circular cross-section, but other cross-sections, for example oval, square or rectangular, are possible Attention is directed to all papers and documents which are filed concurrently with or previous to this specification in connection with this application and which are open to public inspection with this specification, and the contents of all such papers and documents are incorporated herein by reference. All of the features disclosed in this specification (including any accompanying claims, abstract and drawings), and/or all of the steps of any method or process so disclosed, may be combined in any combination, except combinations where at least some of such features and/or steps are mutually exclusive. Each feature disclosed in this specification (including any accompanying claims, abstract and drawings) may be replaced by alternative features serving the same, equivalent or similar purpose, unless expressly stated otherwise. Thus, unless expressly stated otherwise, each feature disclosed is one example only of a generic series of equivalent or similar features. The invention is not restricted to the details of the foregoing embodiment(s). The invention extends to any novel one, or any novel combination , of the features disclosed in this specification (including any accompanying claims, abstract and drawings), or to any novel one, or any novel combination, of the steps of any method or process so disclosed.
