  • the plugwrap 8 has a high base weight, for example 100g/m 2 , to provide rigidity to the recess section 10.
  • the plug wrap 8 forming the recess section 10 at the mouth end of the smoking article is made of heavyweight plugwrap to ensure that the recess is maintained and does not easily collapse due to the absence of any supporting filter material.
  • the first filter portion 6 is disposed between the recess section 10 and the second filter portion 7, such that the first filter portion 6 is closer to the mouth end 9 of the filter 2 than the second filter portion 7 and separates the second filter portion 7 from the recess section 10.
  • the second filter portion 7 is disposed between the first filter portion 6 and the rod of smokeable material 3 when the filter 2 is disposed in the smoking article 1.
  • the first filter portion 6 comprises a plug of filtration material about which the plugwrap 8 is circumscribed.
  • the plug of filtration material is formed of fibrous cellulose acetate, although it will be understood that any conventional filtration material may be used.
  • the first filter portion 6 has first and second circular end faces 13,14.
  • the second filter portion 7 comprises a a plug 15 of filtration material, such as fibrous cellulose acetate, and a particulate material 16, such as carbon or activated carbon interspersed in said filtration material.
  • the particulate material 16 in the central plug 15 is optional (although in some embodiments is preferred).
  • the second filter portion 7 further comprises a wrapper 17, preferably a plugwrap material, and having a particulate material 18 such as carbon or activated carbon adhered on an inner surface thereof.
  • the wrapper 17 circumferentially envelopes the plug 15 about the longitudinal axis extending through the filter 2, and has a lapped and seamed region.
  • the wrapper 17 is a split wrapper bonded to the plug 15.
  • the second filter portion 7 has first and second circular end faces 19,20.
  • the surface of the wrapper 17 having particulate material 18 adhered thereto is shown in Figure 4.
  • the particulate material 18 is disposed in separate regions 21 spaced from each other on the inner surface of the wrapper 17.
  • Each of the separate regions 21 of particulate material 18 extend longitudinally along the wrapper 17, however the particulate material 18 extends only partially across the width of the wrapper 17 and longitudinal edges 22 of the wrapper 17 are free from particulate, thus providing a lapped and stuck seam free from particulate material when formed around the plug 15.
  • the particulate material 18 is disposed in two separate regions spaced diametrically opposite each other.
  • the number of separate regions 21 of particulate material 18 disposed on the wrapper 17 is not limited to two regions, and that other arrangements of particulate material 18 may be used. For example, three, four, five of six separate regions spaced from each other on the inner surface of the wrapper 17 may be used. In such arrangements, the regions are evenly and symmetrically positioned around the longitudinal axis extending through the second filter portion 7. However, other spacings may be used. Further, the regions on a particular wrapper may or may not be all of equal width, and may or may not be of equal width with the gaps between the regions. Similarly, the gaps between the regions may not be of equal width. An advantage of the symmetrical arrangement is that it obviates bending or curving of the filter element that can arise in a non-symmetric arrangement if the adhered particulate material pulls on and distorts the wrapper and hence the filter.
  • the particulate material 18 disposed on the wrapper 17 is selected from a group of relatively high surface area of materials capable of adsorbing smoke constituents without a high degree of specificity, although the particulate material is not limited thereto.
  • Suitable general adsorbents can be selected from the group consisting of carbon, activated carbon, activated charcoal, activated coconut carbon, activated coal-based carbon or charcoal, zeolite, silica gel, meerschaum, aluminium oxide (activated or not), carbonaceous resin or combinations thereof.
  • the particulate mixture used may be a single substance or a mixture, and/or may be in a mixture with another material.
  • the filter 2 is arranged with the recess section 10 disposed at the mouth end 9 of the smoking article 1, which extends from the first end 13 of the first filter portion 6.
  • the recess section 10 is defined by a circumferentially extending inner surface of the plugwrap 8 extending from the first filter portion 6 and the first end 13 of the first filter portion 6, and has an opening 23 at the mouth end 9. The first end 13 of the first filter portion 6 is visible to a user through the opening 23.
  • the second end 14 of the first filter portion 6 abuts the first end 19 of the second filter portion 7, such that the opening 23 of the recess 10 and the second end 20 of the second filter portion 20 define the opposing ends of the filter 2.
  • the provision of the first filter portion 6 between the recess section 10 and the second filter portion 7 allows the second filter portion 7 to be upstream of the filtration material of the first filter portion 6 and prevents the particulate material 18 disposed in a circumferential region of the second filter portion 7 from being dislodged or displaced therefrom and entering the recess section 10. Such loose particulate material 18 could then come into contact with a user. Furthermore, with the above arrangement the particulate material 18 disposed in a circumferential region of the second filter portion 7 and particulate material 16 interspersed in the filtration material of the plug 15 of the second filter portion 7 is not visible to the user.
  • a user inserts the mouth end 9 of the smoking article into their mouth and lights the paper-wrapped rod 3 of smokeable material at the distal end of the smoking article to the mouth end 9 such that said end burns.
  • the filter 2 is located at the mouth end 9 of the smoking article 1 such that a gaseous flow, comprising smoke drawn from the rod of smokeable material 3, moves through the filter 2 before entering the mouth of the user.
  • first filter portion 6 and the second filter portion 7 are shown to have individual plugwraps 8,17, it will be understood that in an alternative embodiment the filter comprises a single plugwrap which extends over the entire filter section 5, joins the first and second filter portion 6,7 and forms the recess section 10.
  • the particulate material 18 extends only partially along said plugwrap so that the particulate material extends over the second filter portion 7 only and does not extend over the first filter portion 6.
  • the filter section 5 is formed from two discrete filter portions, in an alternative embodiment the first and second filter portions 6,7 are integrally formed.
  • the recess section is formed by the plugwrap extending beyond the plug of filtration material, it will be understood that the invention is not limited thereby and that in an alternative embodiment the recess may be formed by the tipping paper.

Abstract

L'invention porte sur un filtre, pour un article à fumer, qui comporte une section filtre et une section en renfoncement, la section en renfoncement étant définie à une extrémité de bouche du filtre et la section filtre étant alignée longitudinalement avec la section en renfoncement et adjacente à celle-ci. Ledit filtre comporte des première et seconde parties de filtre, la première partie de filtre étant disposée entre la section en renfoncement et la seconde partie de filtre, et la seconde partie de filtre comportant un bouchon s'étendant longitudinalement et un matériau particulaire disposé dans une région circonférentielle du bouchon. L'invention porte également sur un article à fumer comportant un filtre selon l'invention.
