Description
OPENING SYSTEM FOR LIQUID PRODUCT PACKAGE
The Related Art
The invention relates to covers of packages containing liquid products.
The invention particularly relates to an opening system for liquid product package providing opening of carton packages containing liquid products by means of location on pre-shaped hole on the box and providing transfer thereof by means of smooth flowing of the liquid contained therein and storing of the remaining liquid after closing without spoiling, splashing thereof.
Background of the Related Art
The process of packaging the liquids in carton based boxes was started in 1915s with waxed boxes and the products in carton based boxes used for packaging the liquids today are packed by means of both pasteurization and aseptic methods.
The key of aseptic packaging idea is the use of aluminium folio layer forming barrier against light and gas. In the beginning of 1990s, aseptic packaging was admitted as the most important invention regarding the food of recent fifty years by US Food Technologies Institute. Upon aseptic packaging systems developed in 1961 and registered by FDA in 1981 , today milk, fruit juice, baby food, milk deserts, soups, ice cream mixtures, mineral additive beverages, pudding and several ready food products are packaged by use of this system. In aseptic packages, the structure of packaging material protects the products against factors such as heat and light damaging the taste and quality of the product. It prevents penetration of odor and gas. Because aluminium, EVOH, silica coated films or aluminium oxide coated PET preventing penetration of odor and gas can be used as oxygen barrier layer in composition of this packaging material. Several new structures have been formed so as to keep the shelf life of product at balance in aseptic packages in the light of existing technological developments.
The products in aseptic carton packages are processed aseptically and are packaged by means of aseptic packaging method. Here the packaging material is also subjected to sterilization. The shelf life of the food processed and packaged aseptically is also balanced. Its quality is almost the same as the fresh food.
Packaging material in aseptic carton packages consist of multi-layer structure. The main layer in such structure is a layer of fibre structure such as paper and providing rigidity and resistance. The inner and outer faces of this layer are coated with thermoplastic materials such as polyethylene film. In addition, the inner surface of the package also contains a layer of light and gas barrier characteristics like aluminium folio. A thermoplastic material is coated on this layer and then this structure is combined with another thermoplastic layer in order to form the inner surface to contact the product of the package. After filling of the aseptic packages to be filled with mass volume, a pre-shaped hole is provided in an appropriate area on the package in order to fix the opening system. There are various methods to form this pre-shaped hole which can also be defined as a detachable part from package. For instance, hole is shaped before coating the basic layer with thermoplastic material layers and barrier layer and then it is subjected to operations required for both protection of the package's aseptic features and easy opening. Another method can be described as coating the packaging material ready for filling with a small part consisting of barrier and thermoplastic layers which can be defined as patching the hole shaped after drilling hole along entire thickness of the material.
The latest developments achieved in all aseptic carton packages can be combined under three items.
• More source saving,
• Easy opening and closing systems,
· Developed series of carton types where liquid is packaged.
Therefore, some patents in the literature about easy to open and close systems are given below.
International patent application numbered WO 9942375 A1 discloses packaging and developments about packaging. A plastic pour spout fitment has a pour spout thereof welded to plastics-coated paperboard packaging material and also has a plunger welded to a disc of the material. The disc mentioned here is defined as a ring of weakening in the material. Following purely linearly axially inward displacement of the plunger relative to the pour spout, preferably the plunger turns around axis A relative to fitment spout to detach the disc from the remainder of the material, thereby the plunger and the disc remove, like a screw cap is screwed off, from the pour spout.
European Patent Application numbered EP1556286B1 describes a sealing packaging consisting of a removable part and closable opening unit for liquid food products. It consists of a frame determining a pouring opening fixed to the package around the opening unit removable part; a removable cap fixed to the frame to close the pouring opening and detachable to open the pouring opening; an opening means containing a solid plate which is removable from frame by pulling removable part section located on the frame and which is removable entire with removable part; and pulling flap of layer located between the removable part and plate and fixed to both of them.
A certain force is applied during opening the plunger or removable part disclosed under above patents. However, use of such types of packages is not appropriate for consumers not to apply such force. In addition, if the force to be applied is much, the liquid contained in the package may splash. For those reasons, they are not useful as turn and open caps.
European Patent application numbered EP1262412B1 discloses a closable opening device for sealed package of pourable food products. The said device comprises of the followings: a frame defining a hole and fitted about a pierceable portion of the package; a removable teeth cap which screws onto the frame to close the hole and a tubular cutting member movably engaging the hole, connected angularly to the cap at least when disengaging the cap from the frame
when unsealing the package, and projecting axially from the frame and inwards of the package to detach the pierceable portion partly from the rest of the package; and the cutting member has, along a lateral wall, at least a couple of through openings to allow air into the package when pouring the product.
The caps used in the present art contain a part cutting the aluminium folio layer on the box and pushing it inward. It has two disadvantages. Firstly, during this cutting and pushing operation, while aluminium folio layer is pushed inward the torn part is detached completely from the main frame of the package and may fall in the liquid. Secondly, in case of forcing and some extraordinary cases, the part conducting pushing and cutting operation may also fall in the liquid. In both cases, a material contacts the liquid at all times. This case is not a nice appearance and may also prevent pouring of the liquid and may also damage the features such as hygiene of the product.
European Patent application numbered EP1627819 A1 developed in order to overcome this problem discloses an opening device for sealed packages consisting of one pourable food product and at least one removable part. The said opening device comprises of followings: a frame defining a pour opening and having a fastening portion fixable to the package about the removable portion; a cap fitted to the frame to close the pour opening, and removable from the pour opening to permit pour-out of the food product; and an anchoring portion, which engages the pour opening, is fixable directly to the removable portion, and is removable from the pour opening to at least partly detach the removable portion from the package; wherein the anchoring portion is connected integrally to the frame by means of breakable connecting means, and is connected to the cap so as to move together with the cap when removing the cap from the pour opening.
The said anchoring part in the opening device described above is connected to the said frame by means of a breakable connection means and is produced integrally with the frame. In addition, the anchoring part is connected to the said cap and the cap moves when it leaves the said hole and provides opening of the hole by means of break of part from pouring hole.
In the embodiments being subject of the said European Patent Application numbered EP 1627819 A1 , it is only possible to pull upward the cap by rotating it and considering the multi-layer structure of the carton packages, this case causes difficulty of operation to open the cap. During the said opening operation, there is no knife, cutting teeth or blade surface conducting the cutting operation. Even if the said pre-shaped hole is opened in this way, the obtained space may not be appropriate. It is seen that the hole is not of the nature foreseen and needed for pouring of the liquid. And also much force is needed to open the cap.
As a result, in order to eliminate the disadvantages in the existing related art, the need for an opening system for a liquid product package providing breaking the aluminium folio layer at several points easily by pulling it outward, providing mounting capsule, which is providing the breaking, onto cap body and locking thereon and thus preventing fall into the liquid in the package and eliminating the probability of permanent contact with liquid and providing considerably high hygienic product packaging; and the inadequacy of the existing solutions have necessitated a development in the related art. Brief Description of the Invention
From the current status of the related art, the present invention aims to develop an opening system comprising of three separate parts produced independent of each other for use in liquid product packages differently from the above described embodiments of the related art in order to prevent contact of removable part with the liquid, to open the opening, where the liquid will pour out, more smooth and easily, to provide better combination of the opening system with the package.
Another purpose of the invention is to disclose a liquid product package opening system preventing liquid pouring out due to problems occurring in the opening system and/or eliminating the problems encountered in case of permanent contact of any part in the opening system with the liquid contained in the package.
A further purpose of the invention is to disclose an opening system for liquid product packages providing centering the cap and the capsule moving upward together with it during opening and providing motion of it upward smoothly and thus equally distributing opening force applied to provide separation of the cap body from mouth body in the desired way in order to provide proper and easy opening of the cap.
Another purpose of the invention is to disclose an opening system for a liquid product package preventing movement of adhesive agents used during application towards non-desired surfaces and thus providing stay of it in the limited region and proper adhering thereof.
A further purpose of the invention is to disclose an opening system for liquid product package providing easy tearing of removable parts and removal from the package by means of cutting teeth located on mouth body.
The structural and characteristics features of the invention and all advantages will be understood better in detailed descriptions with the figures given below and with reference to the figures, and therefore, the assessment should be made taking into account the said figures and detailed explanations.

Detailed Description of the Invention
In this detailed description, opening system (1) for liquid product package (23) being subject of this invention has been disclosed solely for the purpose of better understanding of the subject and described in a manner not causing any restrictive effect.
The invention is an opening system (1) providing opening of the carton packages (23) by means of location on the pre-shaped hole located thereon, providing smooth transfer of the liquid contained therein and providing store of the remaining liquid after closing, without pouring, spoiling; and comprising a mouth body (2) of circular tube form containing screws (10) to provide rotational movement on the outer surface and coupling means (7) for clamping to the package (23); safety ring (17) containing screw (18) on inner surface, holding parts (22) on end part and sealing ring (19) at inner part having same axis as the body (4); a cap body (4) to close on the said mouth body (2); capsule (3) connected to cap body (4) located between the said mouth body (2) and the cap body (4); and it is characterized in that, it consists of at least one holding clamp (14) located at an appropriate place on the capsule (3) in order to ensure performance of two stage motion by the cap body (4) and capsule (3) relative to each other so as to be able to use the liquid contained in the said package (23), in the stage one; while the cap body (4) performs rotation movement on the mouth body (2), as the cap body (4) and capsule (3) are interlocked by means of connection ring (16) and connection housing (15), the capsule (3) moves ahead linearly without rotation and thereupon
pulls upward the removable part (24) adhered to it by help of adhesive agent, in the required and foreseen amount, and in the stage two; after the capsule (3) rotates and moves ahead simultaneously with the cap body (4), it helps pulling upward the removable part (24) by means of twisting thereof in a manner to break from the package (23) and thus performing the function of interlocking of cap body (4) and capsule (3), and at least one directing clamp (21) located at an appropriate place in the inner area of the cap body (4).
Figure 1 is the perspective cross-section view indicating demounted position of parts comprising opening system (1) being subject of the invention. According to the figure, a re-sealable opening system (1) has been provided in order to provide use of the liquid product kept in the said package (23). This system (1) consists of 3 basic parts, namely, mouth body (2) mounted on the pre-shaped hole of the package (23), cap body (4) sealed onto the said mouth body (2) and capsule (3) connected to cap body (4) located between the said mouth body (2) and cap body (4).
The mouth body (2) of the said parts is in the form of circular tube and contains screws (10) on outer surface to provide rotational motion. A coupling means (7) is also provided at the outer part of the circular body (2) and extending outward perpendicular to the body (2) at the end close to the package (23). Barriers (9) are located on inner and outer edges of the lower part facing the package (23) by means of the said coupling means (7). While the mouth body (2) is clamped to package (23) by help of coupling means (7) by adhesive agent put onto the surface between the said barriers (9), the adhesive agent provided on the removable part (24) provides adherence of the capsule (3) to removable part (24) by means of capsule base (12) and absorption channels (11). The said coupling means (7) contains two clamps (8) provided on the farthest end in manner facing each other on upper part. The clamps (8) provides movement of opening systems (1) on the conveyor conveying the opening system (1) to the unit adhering it onto the package (23) in alignment in the step of positioning of the opening system (1) onto the package (23) and the removable part (24) during application.
Cutting teeth (6) are extending towards the package (23) down and connected to the body (2) on the inner side of the same body (2). Support parts (5) are located on upper side of the said cutting teeth (6) at certain distances. The said support parts (5) provide centering the capsule (3) during opening the cap body (4) and separation of the cap body (4) from the mouth body (2) as desired so as to help equal distribution of applied opening force. Therefore, cap body (4) moves upward smoothly and opening action becomes easier. Cutting teeth (6) provide piercing and breaking from several points of the removable part (24) on the package (23) during the said upward movement.
One of the parts constituting opening system (1), the capsule (3) is in circular tube form and it consists at least one holding clamp (14) provided in an appropriate position on outer surface. The clamps (14) provide rotation of the capsule (3) together with the cap body (4) during opening the system (1). Connection housing (15) is located on inner surface of the said capsule (3) parallel to base (12) and at the same level as holding clamps (14). Connection housing (15) provides mounting of the capsule (3) to the cap body (4).
The said capsule (3) also contains absorption channels (1 1) located as spaces extending inward from the base (12) surface and absorbing the excessive adhesive agents on the removable part (24). Flow of excessive adhesive agents into non-desired parts is prevented by means of filling of the excessive adhesive agent into this absorption channels (11). In addition, flowing of some of the adhesive agent in these channels (11) and adherence of it there onto provides also mechanical adherence of capsule (3) and removable part (24). Also for the same purpose, a barrier (13) surrounding fully the base (12) on end side of the base (12) of the capsule (3) is provided.
The last part forming the opening system (1) is the cap body (4) and it contains screw (18) on inner surface and safety ring (17) containing holding parts (22) on end side. In addition, the inner side also contains sealing ring (19) with the same axis as body (4). This ring (19) prevents leakage of the liquid between cap body (4) and mouth body (2) when the package (23) is at inclined position.
Cap body (4) is sealed onto the mouth body (2) as having connection with the capsule (3). The inner side of the body (4) contains a mounting means (20) with the same axis as the body (4) in order to provide connection to the said capsule (3). Capsule (3) is mounted to the cap body (4) by help of the location of the connection ring (16) located at the end side of the mounting means (20) into the connection housing (15) on the capsule (3) (See figure 2). In order to provide rotation of the capsule (3) connected to the cap body (4) on the same axis as the cap body (4), the inner part of the body (4) contains at least one directing clamp (21) to push at least one holding clamp (14).
Figure 2 shows the perspective cross-section view indicating the parts comprising opening system (1) being subject of the invention. Here, it is seen that the capsule
(3) and the cap body (4) are mounted to each other. A solid mounting is realized by positioning the connection ring (16) located on end side of the mounting means
(20) into the connection housing (15) on the capsule (3).
According to figure 3a, the capsule (3) remains outside relative to the cap body
(4) . Here, the safety ring (17) containing absorption channels (11) located on the base (12) and holding part (22) is clearly seen. Figure 3b shows at least one holding clamp (14), at least one directing clamp (21) other than the elements of the safety ring (17) containing absorption channels (11) located on the base (12) and holding part (22). Figure 4a and Figure 4b show top and bottom perspective views of mouth body (2) of the opening system (1) being subject of the invention respectively. Figure 4a shows screws (10) on the body (2), support parts (5) located on the teeth (6) and a couple of opposite located clamps (8) on coupling means (7). Figure 4b shows adhesive agent barriers (9) located on bottom side of coupling means (7) as a difference.
Figure 5a, Figure 5b, Figure 5c show side cross-section view of the opening system (1) being subject of the invention before, after the mounting and open
position and indicate the multi-layer structure of the package (23) in details. The multi-layered package (23) is comprised of basic layer (25) made of a fibre material like paper, outer layer (26) which is a thermoplastic film like polyethylene, also at least one layer functioning as light and gas barrier such as aluminium and inner layer (27) containing various thermoplastic films such as polyethylene. Figure 6a and Figure 6b show top and bottom perspective views of the system (1 ) after mounting respectively. Figure 7 shows the perspective view indicating the position of opening system (1 ) being subject of the invention in position as mounted to the package (23). According to these figures, the system (1 ) mounted as indicated below.
The opening system (1 ) is combined with the package (23) from two separate areas by help of adhesive agent. The coupling means (7) barrier (9) prevents movement of the glue into between cutting teeth (6) in inner side and movement of glue outside the targeted area on the package in outside part. The barrier (13) located on edge of capsule (3) base (12) prevents movement of the glue outside the targeted place on the removable part (24) and also prevents movement of it into between the cutting teeth (6). The absorption channels (1 1 ) located in the centre of the capsule (3) base (12) absorb the excessive glue existing in the environment during adhering the capsule (3) to the removable part (24) from the channels (1 1 ) and keep it there and moreover, entrance of some part of the glue into these channels (1 1 ) also provides better adherence of capsule (3) and removable part (24) mechanically.
The above described elements are the technical and mechanical factors providing better and proper adherence of opening system (1 ) to the package (23). In order to be able to use the liquid contained in the package (23), it is needed to remove the cap body (4) from mouth body (2) by rotating it by help of the screws (18) located on inner surface of the cap body (4) and the screws (10) located on cylindrical outer surface of the mouth body (2). While at least one directing clamp (21 ) located in inner part of the cap body (4) moves from at least one holding clamp (14) preferably towards a second holding clamp (14), the capsule (3) moves
linearly upward axially without rotating by use of force generated by rotation movement of the cap body (4). While the removable part (24) moves upward linearly together with the capsule (3) during this axial movement, the fixed cutting teeth (6) located at lower part of the mouth body (2) drill the removable part (24) and drill it from many points. After the directing clamp (21) contacts preferably other holding clamp (14), the cap body (4) and capsule (3) start to rotate together and continue to move upward and start to make a combined motion. From this point on, while the capsule (3) continues to pull the removable part (24) in axial direction, at the same time start to force due to a torque moment generated by action of rotating. At that time, the support parts (5) located onto inner cylindrical surface of the mouth body (2) guide the capsule (3) and help the capsule (3) move perpendicularly and go out. Upon rotation of the cap body (4) and the capsule (3) the part of the removable part (24) which is drilled by cutting teeth (6) adequately and twisted, which is adhered to the capsule (3) is broken from the package (23) and remains at lower surface of the capsule (3). Thus the opening system (1) performs the most important function expected from it. In other words, the part of the package (23) designed for pouring of the liquid is opened.
Furthermore, the sealing ring (19) located on inner base of the cap body (4) forms a closed area between the mouth body (2) and the cap body (4) by help of its special form and prevents leakage and pouring of the liquid from mouth part of the system when the package (23) stays in inclined position.
Another technical characteristic is the opposite clamps (8) located on end part of the coupling means (7) of the mouth body (2). While it moves on the conveyor towards the point where the opening system (1) will be adhered to the package (23), it is these clamps (8) which provide prevention of damaging positions of each and proper movement in the desired order. The opening system (1) described hereunder has been designed for carton packages (23) containing liquid products particularly food products but this opening system (1) whose mouth is closed with aluminium or similar protective layer and which has screws can also be used for plastic and glass packages (23)
containing other liquids and even for plastic, paper based, carton or glass packages (23) containing even liquid, powder or granulated drugs.
The scope of protection of this application has been specified under claims and cannot be limited to the descriptions only given as sampling above. It is clear that any innovation can be provided by a person skilled in the related art by use of the similar embodiments and/or can also apply this embodiment in other areas for similar purposes used in the related art. Therefore, such embodiments will be lack of novelty and particularly inventive step criteria.
