Abstract
The present invention relates to a backlight unit of a liquid crystal display (LCD) apparatus, and more specifically to a light guide plate capable of condensing incident light from a side light source with respect to a horizontal or vertical view angle distribution according to an optical pattern formed on the lower surface of the light guide plate and then emitting said light towards an upper surface. The light guide plate of the present invention comprises: a patterned layer having a plurality of optical patterns formed on at least one surface, and a plurality of light diffusing particles dispersed in the optical patterns of the patterned layer, wherein a preform of the patterned layer and the light diffusing particles have different indexes of refraction. With the present invention, hot spots and bright lines that occur at a light source and incident light are suppressed, brightness and brightness uniformity are improved, and light, by nature of the light guide plate, is condensed with respect to horizontally and vertically directed view angle distributions according to a given optical pattern, so a reduced number of optical sheets for use in central emission of light onto the upper surface of the light guide plate can be used, which in turn reduces time and cost required for manufacturing such backlight units, thereby making the present invention useful for improving optical characteristics and for lowering manufacturing costs.
