Definitions
- the present invention relates to a modular protection element for motorcyclists or cyclists that provides great safety to motorists or cyclists who are fired towards the shoulder, avoiding its impact against the supports of the guardrails or "quitamiedos" and absorbing energy from the impact.
- protection elements are that described in document FR-2 819 277, which describes a protection piece intended to be hung from the guardrail consisting basically of two adjacent tubes, according to the vertical direction, fixed to supports provided with openings for fitting the pipes.
- this configuration from two tubes presents several drawbacks, namely that the kinetic energy of the motorist's body is sufficient to deform the tubes so that it ends up passing through the space between both. It may also happen that the rider hits above the horizontal mid-plane of the upper tube or below the lower one, so that the rider ends up slipping under the element or passes between the guardrail and the upper tube.
- the element is destined to be fixed directly to the posts by its middle part, which causes that in case of impact, the central fibers remain strained, but not the upper and lower ones, which would allow the body of the rider to pass to the other side.
- Another example of elements of this type is that described in EP 0 823 511 Al, which is also intended to be fixed to the posts.
- the profile has a section whose width and height have the same order of magnitude in dimensions.
- the support is folded from the top to the back, so that the element itself, which can then pass under the body of the injured biker,
- the present invention proposes a modular protection element for motorcyclists or cyclists intended to be arranged under the guardrail and along it according to a longitudinal direction, which comprises a longitudinal body of flexible material, said being hollow body so that an air chamber is configured therein, the longitudinal body section being elongated so that a larger transverse dimension is defined according to a first transverse direction and a second transverse direction perpendicular to said first transverse direction, a surface greater frontal of the element, a greater posterior surface of the element and lateral ends according to said first transverse direction, which is characterized by the fact that said lateral ends of said body comprise means of flexural strength around the first transverse direction, so that when a motorist impacts on said larger front surface of the element, it is deformed by adopting a ribbed configuration that guides the body of the motorist to throughout that element.
- the combination of the aforementioned characteristics provides an optimal protection element because the flexural resistance means according to the first transverse direction, which is obviously the vertical direction once the element is mounted under the guardrail, and arranged at the lateral ends, in Combination with the air chamber that provides flexibility to the part between said lateral ends, causes the motorist to impact, which in general can occur tangentially, the element adopts a ribbed or stretcher shape, channels it along of the element preventing it from passing to the other side of the guardrail. Being the means of resistance to bending at the ends, they take advantage of the entire width of the element according to the first transverse direction.
- the presence of the air chamber causes part of the pressure of the motorist to be distributed inside the element, so that the concentration of forces is not so high at the point of impact, as would occur, for example, in elements protectors such as those described in U 1 067 190 and FR 2 556 755.
- said body comprises holes whose dimensions are selected so that a fraction of the impact energy is dissipated by the exit of part of the chamber air through said holes when a motorist impacts on said larger front surface of the element.
- holes of the order of 1 cm in section are suitable for providing said energy absorption effect.
- said larger cross-sectional dimension is at least three or four times larger than the sectional dimension in the second transverse direction, so that it becomes easier to cover the space between the guardrail and the ground and it is also easier for it to occur. the channeling effect mentioned above.
- one of the ends of the body is extended with a crest along the element.
- the element can be mounted so that the ridge overlaps with the lower edge of the guardrail on the side of the road, so that this ridge constitutes a means of transverse retention of the element which also makes it more difficult for the rider's body to pass between the element and the guardrail.
- the body is made of polyethylene, recyclable plastic or recycled plastic.
- the modular element of the invention is characterized by the fact that said The main front surface of the element is bulged into the element, improving the effect of the mentioned channel.
- the flexural strength means comprise two integral profiles of the body and more advantageously, they are square and metallic and are inside the body.
- the flexural strength means are constituted by matter of the body itself that extends according to said second transverse direction, so that the flexural strength means are achieved by manufacturing the element itself, it is not necessary to add more parts to the element.
- the matter of the body itself that extends according to said transverse direction is obtained by bending inwardly of the element of the ends according to said transverse direction of said greater posterior surface of the element.
- said matter of the body itself which extends according to said transverse direction obtained by bending towards the interior of the element is connected to the interior part of the main front surface discontinuously according to the longitudinal direction.
- said posterior major surface comprises means of flexural strength around the longitudinal direction of the element, so that said posterior major surface limits the arc of the frontal posterior major surface.
- the fixing means to the guardrail posts comprise a support between said element and the post, said support comprising a first fixing plate to the post, and at least two fixing plates to said element, and two laminar arms joining the first plate to each of the fixing plates, said arms being folded along an edge along its central part.
- the central fixing plate allows to fix the support to the post by its vertical part, which offers possibilities of height adjustment.
- the fact that the arms are bent allow a predictable behavior of the element in case of impact, that is to say, it will be possible to anticipate how it will move and deform during the impact.
- the three plates and the two laminar arms are obtained by bending a metal sheet piece, so that its manufacture is simple and a compact piece is achieved.
- both laminar arms are bent in the same direction. It has been found that this characteristic, as will be illustrated later in the figures, allows an almost horizontal displacement of the element in case of impact.
- the fixing means comprise a fork whose two free ends cooperate with two holes of said first plate, so that by means of two Screws can be fixed with variable height said support to a post.

- Figure 15 is a plan view of this embodiment of the invention.
- Figure 16 is a plan view of the element according to this embodiment in which it is folded.
- the invention relates to a modular protection element 1 for motorcyclists or cyclists intended to be arranged under the guardrail 2 and along it in a longitudinal direction L.
- the element 1 of the invention comprises a longitudinal body 3 of flexible material, said body 3 being hollow so that an air chamber 4 is formed therein, fixing means 5 to the posts 6 of the guardrail 2, the section of which is elongated longitudinal body 3 so that a larger transverse dimension is defined according to a first transverse direction V and a second transverse direction H perpendicular to said first transverse direction V, a larger front surface 7 of the element 1, a larger rear surface 8 of the element 1 and lateral ends 9, 10 according to said first transverse direction V.
- the lateral ends 9, 10 of said body 3 comprise flexural strength means 11 around the first transverse direction V, so that when a motorist hits said main front surface 7 of element 1, this it is deformed by adopting a ribbed configuration that guides the body of the motorist along said element 1.
- This channeling effect is improved by giving the element an elongated section, for example by making the transverse dimension larger at least three or four times greater than the dimension of section 3 in the second transverse direction H.
- said body 3 comprises holes 9 whose dimensions are selected so that a fraction of the impact energy is dissipated by the output of part of the chamber air through said at least one hole when a motorist hits said larger front surface 7 of element 1.
- one of the ends 7, 8 of the body is extended with a ridge 12 along the element 1.
- said crest is facing, as shown in Figure 2, against the lower edge of the guardrail.
- the protection element 1 is mounted in urban environments, the element provided with a crest can be mounted on the edge of the sidewalk, with the crest covering the edge of the sidewalk, so as to avoid bumps with the said edge , as is known, the origin of numerous fatal accidents.
- the element of the invention can be made of polyethylene, recyclable plastic or recycled plastic, and in particular it can be manufactured by rotational molding. As can be seen in Figures 1 and 2, the larger front surface 7 of the element is bulged into the interior of the element 1, so that it helps to channel the body of the motorist.
- the flexural strength means 11 according to the direction V comprise two profiles 13, 14 integral with the body 3, which can be made, for example, square, metal and inside the body, such as It can be seen in the section of figure 1.
- the flexural resistance means 11 are constituted by matter of the body 3 itself which extends according to said second transverse direction H, so that the geometric moment of the section in the V direction (vertical when arranged under a guardrail) can be increased until the flexural strength is achieved that allows a stiffness of the enough ends to achieve the ribbed shape mentioned during an impact.
- the posterior major surface 8 comprises flexural strength means 15 around the longitudinal direction L of the element 1, so that said surface greater posterior 8 limits the arching of the greater frontal posterior surface 7.
- the protection element can extend itself superiorly to form its upper part 16 the guardrail 2 itself.
- Said upper part 2 may have a preferably cylindrical shape and internally comprise an air chamber 19 also cylindrical.
- a reinforcement 18, preferably tubular, can be provided to confer stiffness to the upper level prescribed for a guardrail 2.
- This chamber can be interconnected with the air chamber of the main body of the element, although with openings of reduced diameter to confer sufficient rigidity to the upper cylindrical extension.
- said upper extension 2 is provided with grooves or vertical grooves 17 on its two front and rear faces, in order to be able to bend the element, as can be seen in the Figure 16 and allow its adaptation to the contour of the track, especially since the width of the element is greater than the level of the upper extension, as can be seen in Figure 13.
- the fixing means 5 to the posts 6 of the guardrail 2 are adjustable in height.
- the fixing means 5 to the posts 6 of the guardrail 2 comprise a support 101 between said element 1 and the post 6, said support 101 being designed so that it deforms plastically when a motorist impacts on said larger front surface 7 of element 1, so that part of the impact energy is absorbed by the fixing means instead of being restored to the body of the injured motorist.
- said support 101 is characterized by the fact that it comprises a first plate 107 fixing to the post 6, and at least two fixing plates 108, 109 to said element 1, and two arms laminations 110, 111 joining the first plate 107 to each of the fixing plates 108, 109, said arms being folded along an edge along its central part.
- This structure gives the support 101 a great capacity to absorb the impact energy, since several bending zones are defined whose plastic deformation will absorb part of the impact energy.
- the three plates 107, 108, 109 and the two laminar arms 110, 111 are obtained by bending a metal sheet, so that almost the entire piece is obtained by simply cutting a material laminate and a folded back. Also, to improve their behavior in the event of an impact, both laminar arms 110, 111 are bent in the same direction.
- the support bends so that the lower and upper ends follow an approximately horizontal path. This fact is important because it maintains the stability of the protection element, preventing its ends from moving in a vertical direction, which could allow the rider to leave the other side of the element 1 in the direction of the support posts 6.
- the fixing means comprise a fork 105 whose two free ends 112, 113 cooperate with two holes of said first plate 107, so that by means of two screws the support can be fixed with variable height to a post 6.
- This feature is especially important because it allows the element 1 to be adjusted in height, and more specifically it allows its lower edge to be approximated to the ground, so that the passage of the body of the motorist below element 1 is avoided, since in the event of a fall, it usually comes sliding down soil.
