Abstract
One embodiment of the present invention relates to a character input apparatus. Said embodiment of the present invention provides a character input apparatus comprising: a key arrangement unit which arranges 12 basic keys into 4 lines and 3 rows, and arranges extension keys for every space between the basic keys; a first key allocation unit which allocates respective characters to 9 basic keys from first to third lines and to each of extension keys; a second key allocation unit which allocates specific functions to three basic keys of the fourth line; a first key processing unit which processes the allocated characters as input characters when a keystroke occurs from the 9 basic keys of first to third lines, compares the difference between the input times of two sequential keystrokes with a preset threshold value when two sequential keystrokes occur from two adjacent basic keys, and processes the character allocated to the extension key arranged between two adjacent basic keys as an input character on the basis of the result of the comparison; and a second key processing unit which performs the function allocated thereto upon the occurrence of a keystroke from three basic keys of the fourth line. Said embodiment of the present invention enables a convenient and rapid key input method which is appropriate for a keypad having 12 keys arranged into 4 lines and 3 rows in small electronic devices such as portable phones, remote controls, general telephones, etc.
