Abstract

The present invention relates to aerobic production of 1,3-Propanediol by Klebsiella pneumoniae. A process for efficient conversion of glycerol to 1,3-Propanediol which is stoichiometric over a higher ratio of propanediol/ glycerol (mol/mol) compared to the theoretical theoretical yield under microaerobic conditions is provided. Production of 1,3-PDO from crude glycerol obtained from biodiesel process at a competitive and reproducible yield as compared to pure glycerol is also provided.
