- the present invention relates to a location estimation and data transmission method enabling to embed location and various information in the audio output from an audio broadcasting device and then to use this information in different areas.
- Audio watermarking is a data hiding technique that enables embedding data into the audio signal. Information can be embedded into and extracted from the host signal.
- the cover signal is the primary communication signal and may be binary, multi valued, analog waveform, or in the form of any other type of primary communication signal.
- security strength indication, location tracking, intrusion detection and transmission of non-security information are carried out.
- watermarks are embedded into the data output from the receiver unit in order to perform location estimation. For this, a sensor is incorporated into the receiver unit.
- location estimation systems usually methods based on motion parameters of radio waves are employed. For example, location of the user is estimated by computing the angle of incidence or amplitude of the signal. Level of complexity increases in these types of methods since it is required to find the values of the mentioned parameters.
- the objective of the present invention is to realize a location estimation and data transmission method in a wireless system wherein locations of the points of interest (POI) are determined by the watermarks incorporated to the audio signal in the transmitter without requiring an additional hardware and various applications are offered to the user according to the determined location.
- Another objective of the invention is to realize a location estimation and data transmission method wherein various news such as campaign information are communicated to the subscribers who are in the vicinity of the point of interest.
- a further objective of the present invention is to realize a location estimation and data transmission method allowing to monitor customer profiles of the subscribers at the points of interest in order to improve the wireless services provided by the service provider.
- Figure 1 is the schematic block diagram of the location estimation and data transmission method.
- At least one transmitter (1), at least one subscriber station (5) comprising a receiver (2) and at least one server (3) are used in the inventive location estimation and data transmission method. Communication between the server (3) and the receiver (2) is provided by means of a wireless network (4).
- the transmitter (1) is located at the points of interest (POI). Points of interest are the places or regions where location estimation will be carried out. Points of interest are for example museums, restaurant chains, hospitals, cinemas or locations with specific functions that enable audio broadcast, such as vicinity of a television or radio. In order for a place or region to be a point of interest, it is sufficient to have a device like a speaker at that place or region that is capable of audio broadcasting. Thus, points of interest can be fixed or mobile.
- the receiver (2) is a sensor capable of detecting audio and it is located in a mobile subscriber station (5).
- the mobile subscriber station (5) is a mobile telephone or any device comprising an audio sensor such as a microphone, a watermark decoder, a controller and a screen.
- the server (3) includes various application information such as service provider's campaigns and services offered and the user information of the subscriber of the service provider.
- the location information of the points of interest is integrated as a watermark into an audio signal to be output from a speaker or similar audio source broadcasting at the point of interest (POI).
- the subscriber stations (5) in turn estimate the location of the points of interest (POI) by decoding the watermarks by means of the audio watermark decoders.
- data reception process is automatically triggered, and when the transmitter (1) starts to broadcast, the receiver (2) automatically detects the transmitted data. In case the data reception process starts automatically, the user can turn off the receiver (2) if she/he desires.
- the receiver (2) when the transmitter (1) starts to broadcast, the receiver (2) automatically detects the transmitted data, but an alert is given in the user screen prompting user confirmation to display the said information.
- an alert is given in the user's mobile subscriber station (5) screen informing that the point of interest (POI) information are received, the data reception process begins if the user accepts the transmitted information.

- the receiver (2) receives the audio comprising the watermark message and transmits it to the controller in the subscriber station (5).
- the watermark message is decoded by means of the decoder and the location information is sorted.
- the subscriber station (5) sends this information to the wireless network (4).
- the location information is transmitted to the server (3) by the wireless access network (4).
- the server (3) stores the said location information.
- the said location information can then be used in instant position location services concerning the points of interest (POI) such as social networking, mapping or navigation services.

- the server (3) keeps the statistics of the times that the users are present at the same location within a specific period of time, in accordance with the location information received from the subscriber stations (5), whereby discovering social tendencies and habits of the users.
- the service provider organizes campaigns according to the user habits.
- the application can also be used in location estimation applications such as in home or area security or disaster relief efforts. For example, following a disaster, when a mobile transmitter (1) starts broadcasting, the receivers (2) in the vicinity of the transmitter (1) automatically detect the transmitted data. If this data is transmitted to the server (3), information related to the number of receivers affected by the disaster and the locations of these receivers are attained.
- the server (3) when the location information is transmitted to the server (3), the server (3) sends various information to the subscriber station (5) related to the location information.
- the information is output from the server (3) and transmitted to the subscriber station (5) through the wireless network (4).
- the location information when the location information is delivered to the server (3), the current campaign information provided by the service provider concerning the location at which the user is located or about which the user seeks to find out information can be transferred to the user's subscriber station (5).
- the user can inform the server (3) of her/his location and request information from the server (3) related to the restaurant or cinema, shopping mall, etc. near her/his location and the server (3) transmits these information to the subscriber station (5).
- the point of interest (POI) is the vicinity of a television set or radio.
- the time information is also transmitted to the server (3) when transmitting the location information of the point of interest (POI).
- time information is also incorporated to the audio signal as a watermark.
- a media content sample such as music, video is sent to the subscriber station (5) providing the user with options such as purchasing the entire media content sent to him or using it for trial purposes.

- the location estimation resolution in the invention is directly proportionate to the number of transmitters to be used in the system. Due to this feature, the resolution can be enhanced or decreased in line with the system and application requirements.
- determining and processing the parameter information of the audio wave as carried out in the prior art is not required and information can be accessed by the help of only a single watermark sensor.
- the inventive location estimation and data transmission method enables to embed location and various information output from any audio broadcasting device and then to use these information in different fields.
- the mobile station used in the invention is a device accompanying the user and comprising an audio receiver (2).
- An additional hardware is incorporated to the mobile station or transmitter (1) in order to carry out location estimation and to send information to the user. This has provided cost reduction when forming location tracking systems.

Abstract
La présente invention porte sur un procédé d'estimation d'emplacement et de transmission de données selon lequel les informations d'emplacement des points d'intérêt (POI) sont incorporées sous la forme d'un filigrane numérique dans un signal audio devant être émis par un haut-parleur ou une diffusion de source audio similaire au niveau du point d'intérêt (POI), et les stations d'abonnés (5) estiment l'emplacement des points d'intérêt (POI) par décodage des filigranes numériques au moyen des décodeurs de filigrane numérique audio.
