- the upper 12 and lower 14 tray portions each include a generally horizontally- extending flange 20 extending generally perpendicularly the sidewall 18.
- the tray portions 12 and 14 may be made from a variety of materials. These materials include, but are not limited to, synthetic -based materials, natural-based materials, and combinations thereof. Natural-based materials may be used to provide a sustainable package 10 which is easily recyclable or biodegradable. Examples of natural-based materials include, but are not limited to, cellulosic -based materials such as cardboard and paperboard; plastic sheets derived from corn or other organic materials; expanded foam derived from starch or the like; and combinations thereof.
- the thickness of the upper 12 and lower 14 tray portions may be optimized according to the selected applications. In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the thickness of the tray portion is at least about 1 mm. In one embodiment, the thickness of the tray portion is at least about 3 mm. In one embodiment, the thickness of the tray portion is more than about 3 mm.
- the tray may also be made of a raw material and with a thickness sufficient to support at least about one pound, or possibly more, of packaged goods while retaining its shape.
- the upper 12 and lower 14 tray portions may be formed into the desired shaped by a variety of methods. These methods include, but are not limited to, applications of pressure, of moisture such as in the form of steam, or of combinations thereof.
- the upper 12 and lower 14 tray portions are nested as shown in FIG. 2 such that the upper tray portion 12 is fit inside of the lower tray 14 portion, and the flanges 20 are flush against each other.
- the flanges 20 may be coupled together to join the upper 12 and lower 14 tray portions.
- the flanges 20 may be coupled together by a variety of methods. These include, but are not limited to, heat sealing, adhesives, mechanical joining and the like.
- the sidewall 18 of the lower tray portion 14 may be longer than the sidewall 18 of the upper tray portion 12 such that a compartment or gap 22 is defined between the tray portions 12 and 14.
- the disclosed tray may further include an absorbent component 24 positioning in the compartment 22 to adsorb fluids, such as juices and blood, of the packaged goods like meats.
- the absorbent component 24 may be designed in any form to optimize the adsorbent efficiency of the disclosed tray.
- the absorbent component 24 may include a pair of absorbent pads 24a and 24b positioning on either side of a stiffening rib 26 formed in the lower tray portion 14, as shown in FIGs. 1, 3, and 4.
- the adsorbent component may be made of a variety of materials. Because the absorbent pads 24a and 24b may be positioned between the upper 12 and lower 14 tray portions, the pads 24a and 24b remain generally hidden from view.
- the upper tray portion 12 may include a plurality of slots or vents 28 in a cantilevered or louvered configuration.
- each slot 28 may take the form of a rectangle cut around three edges thereof and deflected downwardly about the remaining attached edge such that the slot 28 protrudes into the compartment 22, as shown in FIG. 3.
- the slots 28 allow fluids of the packaged goods, such as juices, blood and the like, to flow therethrough and enter the compartment 22 where the fluids may be absorbed by the absorbent pads 24a and 24b. Furthermore, the slot 28 may be designed in an angled nature such that the fluids are allowed to pass into the compartment 22, yet not exiting the compartment 22 when the tray 10 are angled or stacked in a vertical configuration.
- the number, shape and arrangement of slots 28 on the upper tray portion 12 may be varied, depending on the desired end-use applications.
- the upper tray portion 12 includes four longitudinal slots 28 and two lateral slots 28, each positioned adjacent to the lateral ends of the tray 10. (FIGs. 1 and 2)
- the lower tray portion 14 may include a stiffening rib 26 in the form of a generally elongated protrusion extending upwardly from the base 14 of the lower tray portion 14.
- the stiffening rib 26 has a generally flat upper surface 30 that engages, and thereby supports, the base 16 of the upper tray portion 12. (FIGs. 3, 4, and 5).
- the stiffening rib 26 may also provide stiffness to the lower tray portion 14.
- the upper tray portion 12 may include stiffening ribs or support portions that extend downwardly and engage the lower tray portion 14.
- the packaged goods may be placed thereon (i.e., on the base 16 of the upper tray portion 12) and an outer clear transparent/translucent stretch film may be wrapped around the packaged goods and tray 10.
- the double-walled construction of the tray 10 forms the compartment 22 to provide a dead air space and to store the absorbent pads 24a and 24b.
- the compartment 22 may also improve circulation about the packaged goods and serve as a reservoir for gases. For example, oxygen or inert gases (such as argon) may be injected into the sealed package.
- the compartment 22 could provide a reservoir to increase the gas-to-meat product ratio which may be desirable to be maintained at a minimum level to ensure that the gas provides the desire qualities to the meat product.
- the compartment 22 provides an insulating gap, for example, if the package is placed on an extremely cold surface (i.e. underlying the lower tray portion 14).
- the gas in the compartment 22 insulates the meat product, thereby minimizing an undesired freezing of the meat product and/or keeping the meat product cold when placed on a warm surface.
- Tray 10 includes the upper 12 and lower 14 tray portions somewhat similar to the upper 12 and lower 14 tray portions described in FIGs 1-5 in relation to, for example, their configuration (i.e. the shape and arrangement of the base 16, sidewalls 18, and flanges 20) as well as the selection and thickness of materials.
- the upper tray portion 12 of the disclosed tray 10 may include a pair of slots 28 positioned adjacent to its longitudinal edges thereof.

- the lower tray portion 14 may include a stiffening component similar to the stiffening rib 26 shown in the embodiment of FIGs. 1-5.
- the disclosed tray 10 may include absorbent component 24, which may be positioned on and supported by the upper tray portion 12.
- the absorbent component 24 has a rectangular shape and covers the majority of the base 16 of the upper tray portion 12. While the absorbent component 24 may absorb most fluids of the packaged goods, the slots 28 allow any excess fluids to enter the compartment 22 defined between the tray portions 12 and 14. Furthermore, the compartment 22 may provide the insulation, gas reservoir and circulation functions described above.
- the absorbent component 24 is not positioned in the compartment 22, but is instead placed on the top portion 12 which may provide for easier manufacture. Moreover, the adsorbent component 24 can be easily separated from the tray portions 12 and 14 so that the tray portions 12 and 14 may be recycled and reused separately from the pad 24 if, for example, the absorbent component 24 is not made of a reusable/recyclable material.
- the tray 10/upper tray portion 12 may have a surface area sufficient to support a variety of cuts of meats, or other products, thereon. In one embodiment, the tray 10/upper tray portion 12 may have a surface area of at least about 4 square inches.
