Description

PALLET RACKING SHIELD KIT
This invention relates to a protective kit for mitigating damage to an upright frame of a pallet racking system.
A known protective device for this purpose takes the form of an arcuate polymeric leg for shielding the front face and adjacent portions of the opposed side faces of an upright frame and is disclosed in GB2413276A. The known device comprises a channel section length of piping which is force fitted around an upright frame at its floor engaging end. The known device is difficult to fit and to remove and is limited in its application to fit a variety of frame sizes which exist in the pallet racking frame industry.
The present invention seeks to provide a more versatile protective device which can be fitted to a wide range of frame sizes and which can be readily attached to and detached from an upright frame. This is particularly advantageous in facilitating the inspection of upright frame members.
One aspect of the present invention provides a protective kit for mitigating damage to an upright frame of a pallet racking system, the upright frame having a floor engaging end and front and side faces, and wherein the protective kit comprises
(a) an impact resistant elongate shield adapted to engage a length of the upright frame adjacent its floor engaging end to provide a protective covering for deflecting impacts to said front and side faces of the frame; the shield having receiving means to receive a releasable locking device
(b) a releasable locking device having (i) a body portion, and
(ii) at least one integral locking projection, wherein the releasable locking device is a push-fit into the shield and into the upright frame such that said body portion is accommodated in said receiving means of the shield and said integral locking projection extends beyond said receiving means and automatically engages in the upright frame to detachably secure the shield to the upright frame.
According to a feature of this aspect of the invention, the kit may comprise a plurality of receiving means each to receive one of said releasable locking devices.
According to another feature of this aspect of the invention, said shield may have a main elongate body having an arcuate front for shielding the front face of said frame and wherein the receiving means are disposed adjacent each of the opposite ends of said front. Preferably, each of said receiving means comprises a slotted opening in said arcuate front of the main elongate body.
According to yet another feature of this aspect of the invention, the body portion of each releasable locking device may have an arcuate face which forms a part of said arcuate front of the main elongate body when the releasable locking device is fully engaged in its respective slotted opening.
According to a further feature of this aspect of the invention, the main elongate body may be generally of 'D'-shaped cross-section. Preferably, said main elongate body has a pair of wings each extending from opposite ends of the straight face of the 'D' to pass around portions of opposed said side faces of the upright frame..
According to a still further feature of this aspect of the invention, each of said releasable locking devices may have a pair of integral locking projections, and wherein each of said integral locking projections comprises a serrated leg to facilitate automatic locking with said upright frame when the releasable locking device is push-fitted into the shield.
According to another feature of the invention, the shield may have a back face for juxtaposition with said front face of the upright frame, and wherein a resilient substrate is provided on said back face of the shield to provide a padded layer between the shield and the upright frame.
Another aspect of the invention provides a plurality of protective kits each as above defined in any of the seven immediately preceding paragraphs.
An embodiment of a protective device according to the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a side view of a racking shield according to the invention,
Figure 2 is a cross section through the shield along line 2-2 shown in Figure 1 ,
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the shield,
Figure 4 is a plan view of a clip according to another aspect of the invention for use with the shield
Figure 4a is a side view of the clip shown in Figure 4,
Figure 5 is a aisde view of the racking shield and a portion of an upright frame of a pallet racking system with the shield positioned for attachment to the frame,
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the shield and frame assembly with the shield fitted to the floor engaging end of an upright frame member, and
Figure 7 is a sectional plan view of the assembly shown in Figure 6.
Referring to the drawings, a protective device for detachable cooperation with an upright frame member F of an adjustable pallet racking system comprises an elongate shield 10 formed from an impact resistant polymeric material.
The shield 10 has a main elongate body B which is generally of 'D'-shaped cross-section to provide an arcuate front 12 for shielding a length of the front face 15 of the upright frame member F at its floor engaging end, and a pair of wings 14, 16 extending away from the arcuate front to pass around portions of the opposed side faces 17, 19 of the frame member. As best seen in Figure 2 and 7, the wings each extend from opposite ends of the straight face of the 'D'.
The main elongate body B is about 600mm in length to provide protection for a similar length of the frame member F adjacent its floor engaging end where damage to the frame can occur primarily by impact from fork-lift trucks which manouvre between upright frame members to load pallets onto racking platforms supported by the upright frames.
One end of the main elongate body B is cut-away at 18 to form a lead section to facilitate fitting the shield by a slide and push fit to the upright frame F. To this end, the wings 14, 16 of the shield are resiliently flexed relative to the main elongate body B so that they grip the opposed side faces 17, 19 of the upright frame when the shield is fitted in place.
In order releasably to connect the shield to the upright frame, locking clips 20 are provided (see Figure 4). Each locking clip has a segment shaped body 22, by which the clip can be manipulated, and a pair of spaced serrated legs 24, 26, respectively. In use, each clip is inserted into a slot 28, 30, 32 formed in the 'D'-shaped body of the shield so that the serrated legs 24, 26 pass between wings 14, 16 and are locked into adjustment apertures provided in the upright frame member F.
The serrated legs 24, 26 each terminate in a locking nose 24a, 26a, respectively to lockingly engage in adjustment apertures while the serrations provided progressive adjustment for the clips. The slots are arranged in the body of the shield so that a single slot 28 is provided adjacent one end of the body and a pair of slots 30,32 is provided adjacent the opposite end of the shield. This arrangement lends versatility to the shield assembly in being compatible with a wide range of different racking systems. Indeed it is envisaged that with a small selection of different locking clip sizes and two different shield sizes, about 90% of existing pallet racking arrangements can be furnished with detachable shields according to the invention. For example, a first shield size is provided to fit upright frame members to width between 75mm and 90mm in which the inside throat measurement of the shield (between the wings of the shield) is 92mm and a second shield size is provided to fit upright frame members of width between 100mm and 120mm in which the inside throat measurement of the shield is 122mm.
The arcuate edge 34 of the locking clip is dimensioned so that when the clip is fully engaged in the shield and locked into the upright frame F, edge 34 sits susbstantially flush with the arcuate front 12 of the shield.
As best seen in Figures 3 and 6, the arcuate front of the shield is formed with raised ribbing R to give it added strength and durability.
In fitting the shield to an upright frame, a number of resilient pads (not shown) may be provided on the back face 12a of the shield to be interposed between the shield and the frame member to provide a padded layer therebetween which enhances the absorbtion of impact blows to the shield in use.
