Description
A FUEL TANK AND FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY FOR AUTOMOBILE
FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to fuel supply system for automobile vehicles and more particularly, a fuel tank and fuel pump assembly for automobile.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
The use of fuel pump module to pump fuel from fuel tanks is well known in the automotive industry. A typical fuel pump module may include a fuel pump, a fuel reservoir, a fuel level sensor, a suction filter positioned upstream of the pump inlet and a pressure regulator.
Installation of the fuel pump module into the fuel tank is made possible by an opening or a hole in the tank that provides access to the inside of the tank. The opening is normally formed in the top wall of the tank and is normally circular.
In a typical fuel supply unit mounting, for a vehicle, a covering flange is configured for sealing a fuel pump to a wall of a fuel tank with gasket. Covering flange is secured to wall of fuel tank with metal studs, without passing through the gasket flange mounted for sealing the fuel supply unit with wall of fuel tank. The fuel supply module is structured such that a bottom wall of module is continuously held in abutting contact with bottom wall portion of the fuel tank.
Attempts have heretofore been made to provide an enhanced, sealed mounting arrangement, for a fuel supply module.
OBJECTS OF INVENTION
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved fuel supply module mounting arrangement for automotive fuel tank with enhanced sealing of fuel vapours.
-Yet another object of this invention is to provide an improved fuel supply module mounting arrangement for automotive fuel tank which is simple in construction and cost effective.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION
The fuel supply module mounting arrangement for automotive fuel tank in accordance with this invention basically comprises of a metal mounting ring, fuel pump module disposed with covering flange, gasket flange, mounting studs which protrude upwardly against top wall of fuel tank, and a metal flange. Wherein a single opening is provided on upper wall of fuel tank for mounting fuel pump module. The fuel pump module is mounted on the metal mounting plate having projection welded studs. Gasket flange is inserted between metal mounting ring and covering flange. A metal flange is fastened with former assembly with the aid of flange nuts. Complete assembly of fuel pump module is always submerged in swirl pot mounted on bottom of fuel tank. Fuel pump module is a short column with one end fixed to the upper wall of the fuel tank and other free end protected against slosh forces inside fuel tank with able aid of swirl pot. Moreover the ratios of thickness of gasket seal, covering flange and metal flange are maintained in fixed proportions in accordance with fuel pump module length to ensure effective sealing without hampering the intended cause and increasing the material costs. The preferred ratio of thickness of the gasket seal and the covering flange with the fuel pump module is in the range of 0.026 to 0.031 the preferable value being 0.026
This invention ensures improved sealing on account of dearth of counter spring force on or after bottom of the fuel pump module.
This invention ensures improved sealing in regards to absence of additional apertures on the tank upper wall other than that for accommodating fuel pump module.
This invention ensures improved sealing on account of assistance gained from the self weight of fuel pump module backing up the sealing compel provided by the fastening studs.
This invention ensures improved sealing on account of assistance gained from optimized ratios of mating elements with respect to the length of fuel pump module.
This invention ensures reduced assembly cost in regards to absence of springs required for creating abutment force acting against slosh forces in fuel tank.
This invention ensures reduced material costs in regards to usage of optimized thickness ratios of the mating elements of the mounting arrangement.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION
Referring now to the drawings wherein the showings are for the purpose of illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention only, and not for the purpose of limiting the same.
Referring to FIG. 1, a sectional view of an automotive fuel supply module assembly illustrating fuel tank (1) includes an upper wall (2) having an access port (3) there in. The access port (3) is closed and sealed by a metal mounting ring (4) and a gasket seal (5) and another metal flange (8). A fuel pump module sealingly and downwardly disposed therefrom through said access port. The free end of the module being position and submerged within a swirl tank provided at the base of the fuel tank.
Referring to FIG. 2, mounting studs (9) are arranged circumferentially on mounting ring (4) and are projection welded to it. A gasket seal (5) is mounted over mounting ring (4) with projection welded studs (9) passing through holes in it. The covering flange (7) is mounted over mounting ring (4) with gasket seal (5) inserted in between. The arrangement is then clamped to studs (9) with flange nuts (10) over metal flange
(8). The complete assembly is always submerged in swirl pot (11) assisting to sustain against the slosh forces produced in fuel tank (1) as referred in fig. 1.
Referring to fig. 1, fuel pump module (6) acts as a short column with one end fixed to the upper wall (2) of the fuel tank and other free end protected against slosh forces inside fuel tank (1) with able aid of swirl pot (11). Moreover the ratios of thickness of gasket seal (5), covering flange (7) and metal flange (8) are maintained in fixed proportions in accordance with fuel pump module (6) length to ensure effective sealing without hampering the intended cause and increasing the material costs.
