Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for producing alcohol by dimerizing raw alcohol having 4 or less carbon atoms.
- the Guerbet reaction is an important organic synthesis reaction as a method for producing dimerized alcohol by dimerizing raw material alcohol.
- This reaction mechanism corresponds to a reaction (hydrogen transfer reaction) in which hydrogen is extracted from a raw material alcohol using a basic compound and a complex composed of a transition metal and a phosphine compound, as shown in the following reaction formula 1.
- Non-Patent Document 1 Reactions that produce aldehyde intermediates, reactions that turn aldehyde intermediates into ⁇ , ⁇ -unsaturated aldehyde intermediates dimerized by aldol condensation reactions, and hydrogenation reactions that produce ⁇ , ⁇ -unsaturated aldehyde intermediates (hydrogen It is considered that the reaction proceeds in a combination of three reactions that become a dimerized alcohol in the transfer reaction (Non-Patent Document 1 and Non-Patent Document 2).
- n-butanol which is a dimerized alcohol, where the raw alcohol is ethanol having 2 carbon atoms. This is because the yield and selectivity of the obtained n-butanol are low and this is not an industrially advantageous reaction.
- the present invention produces a dimerized alcohol with high yield and high selectivity when a Guerbet reaction is performed in the presence of a complex containing a transition metal and a base using an alcohol having 4 or less carbon atoms as a raw material. It aims to provide a method.
- the present inventors have found that the above problems can be solved by reacting under a hydrogen pressure in the presence of a complex containing one or more transition metals and a base,
- the present invention has been completed. That is, the gist of the present invention resides in the following [1] to [8].
- [1] A method for producing an alcohol by dimerizing a raw alcohol having 4 or less carbon atoms in an environment having a hydrogen partial pressure of 0.1 MPa or more.
- the method for producing an alcohol according to [1] wherein the dimerization is performed in the presence of a complex containing one or more transition metals and a base.
- [3] The method for producing alcohol according to [1] or [2], wherein the hydrogen partial pressure is 0.5 to 20 MPa.
- [4] The method for producing an alcohol according to any one of [1] to [3], wherein the complex has a ligand derived from a phosphine compound.
- the phosphine compound is triarylphosphine.
- [6] The method for producing an alcohol according to any one of [1] to [4], wherein the transition metal is a Group 8 to Group 10 transition metal.
- n-butanol as a dimerized alcohol can be produced with high efficiency and high selectivity in a reaction of dimerizing ethanol as a raw material in the presence of a base and a transition metal complex.
- FIG. 1 is a graph showing changes in the yield and selectivity of n-butanol with respect to the hydrogen partial pressure during the reaction, using the values in Table 1.
- n-butanol can be obtained with high selectivity in the method for producing n-butanol by dimerization reaction of raw material ethanol.
- the reason for this is not necessarily clear, but is presumed as follows. That is, the chemically relatively unstable crotonaldehyde intermediate produced in the second stage of the above reaction mechanism (Scheme 1) is smoothly removed by the effect of hydrogen pressure before disappearing in the decomposition reaction. It is thought that it was rapidly changed to a hydrogenated and stable n-butanol form.
- the most preferable hydrogen partial pressure is a range of 1.0 MPa or more and 10 MPa or less.
- the total pressure of the reaction system is the vapor pressure of ethanol, reaction intermediates, n-butanol, by-products, etc. according to the reaction temperature, the vapor pressure of the solvent when using the solvent, and the inert gas such as nitrogen when containing an inert gas. Although it is determined by the sum of the partial pressures and is not particularly limited, an unnecessary increase in the pressure in the reactor should be avoided from the viewpoint of economy and safety.
