Abstract
A control device for an external modulator modulates projected light from a light source in accordance with an input signal. The control device is provided with a light output control means that controls an output of the light source; a low frequency signal generation means that generates and outputs a low frequency signal; a signal superimposing means that superimposes a first modulation signal as the input signal on the low frequency signal to obtain a second modulation signal and applies the second modulation signal to the external modulator; a low frequency signal detection means that detects a component of the low frequency signal from a light output from the external modulator, compares a phase of the detected low frequency signal with that of the low frequency signal outputted from the low frequency signal generation means, and outputs their phase difference information; and an operation point control means that, when the output of the light source is controlled by the light output control means so as to make the output of the external modulator not larger than a predetermined target value, carries out a leading-in control of an operation point of the external modulator based on the phase difference information.
