Definitions
- This invention relates to a blade for a laryngoscope, and in particular, to a laryngoscope suitable for use with small animals.
- Laryngoscopes have been used for a large number of years for intubation of humans, for example, during anaesthesia, in order to provide rapid access to the trachea and minimise damage to teeth, tempero-mandibular joints and other vulnerable structures.
- a conventional laryngoscope comprises a handle joined by a folding blade that incorporates arrangements for lighting and there are several designs of these currently popular and available for use on humans. These typically include blade designs such as the Miller, Wisconsin and Macintosh blades that have been available for the last 50 years or so.
- this has a circular profile extending through over 180 degrees with an elongate nose portion to guide insertion, and attachment means for attaching the blade to a handle.
- the present invention is concerned with providing a design of blade for use on a laryngoscope which blade is particularly suited and designed for use with small animals.
- the present invention provides a blade for a laryngoscope, the blade having: an elongate body portion open along at least a portion of its length and having a generally flattened upper wall and a curved lower wall defining an open passage; a nose portion formed as an extension of the lower wall at one end of the body portion; and attachment means at a second end of the body portion remote from said first end.
- the cross-sectional curvature of the nose portion is substantially the same as that of the lower wall.
- the nose portion is narrower than the lower wall and tapers in a direction away from said lower wall.
- the upper and lower walls of the body portion in cross-section, extend around the longitudinal axis of the blade by an angle of less than 180°.
- the blade is straight.
- the preferred embodiment may further comprise means for transmitting light to the nose portion.
- the means for transmitting light may comprise a tube extending along said body portion within the confines of said upper and lower walls. Preferably, the tube exits said body portion through an opening adjacent said second end of said body portion.
- the upper and lower portions of the blade extend through less than 180 degrees in defining the open passage.
- the blade is less bulky in its cross sectional dimension than the equivalent blade in use for human usage but for the anatomy of small animals is sufficient to define the needed passage.
- the nose portion of the blade may be provided with suitable profiling to assist with the insertion into a patient.
- the provision of the profiling removes sharp edges and corners and therefore removes the chances of damage being caused by the insertion of the blade.
- the blade may incorporate a light source.
- the blade including the nose portion is straight.
- the blade is straight so that the tip can be viewed and if desired the epiglottis disengaged or fixed.
- Figure 1 shows a side view of a preferred form of blade in accordance with the present invention:
- Figure 2 shows a plan view of the blade shown in figure 1 ;
- Figure 3 shows an end view of the blade in the direction of arrow A of figure 1.
- the blade 10 for use with a laryngoscope.
- the blade 10 has a main, elongate body portion 12 which extends into a nose portion 14 at a first end region 16 of the main portion 12.
- the main body portion 12 is part tubular in shape, open along at least a portion of its length.
- the body portion comprises an elongate open portion 22 which in cross-section has a generally flattened upper wall 24 and a curved lower wall 26 depending from the upper wall 24.
- the lower wall 26 curves inwardly such that the lower and upper walls in combination partially enclose or define a tubular space or passage 27.
- the upper and lower walls 24, 26 of the blade 10 extend through an angle of less than 180 degrees around the longitudinal axis of the blade in defining the open passage.
- a boss or lateral extension 18 is formed at a second end region 20 of the body portion 12 opposite the nose portion 14 and has attachment means 30 preferably in the form of a connector which enables the attachment of the blade 10 to a handle of a laryngoscope.
- the boss is conveniently formed integral with the body portion 12.
- a passage or opening 32 is provided in the side wall 26 of the body portion 12 adjacent to the second end 20 of the body portion.
- the nose portion 14 is formed at one end of the main body portion 12 as an extension of the lower portion of the lower wall 26.
- the nose portion 14 may be formed with suitable profiling to assist insertion of the device but as can be seen in the drawings in this embodiment its cross-sectional curvature is similar to or the same as the upper portion of the lower wall 26.
- the particular design of the blade allows access of the blade to a narrower oro-pharynx typically found with small animals, significantly reducing the chances of damage thereto.
- the attachment means 30 may be a conventional mounting such as is currently in use and a detailed description is not required.
- a tube or conduit 36 passes through the attachment means 30 and the opening 32 to extend along a portion of the length of the main body portion 2.
- the tube is open at its left hand end as seen in Figure 1 , adjacent the first end region 16.
- the tube transmits light from the handle of the laryngoscope to illuminate the trachea.
- the blade 10 in the example shown is generally straight so that the tip can be viewed and if desired the epiglottis disengaged or fixed. However, it will be appreciated that the blade 10 may also be suitably curved for specific applications.
