Description

Description
A WASHING MACHINE
[0001] The present invention relates to a washing machine comprising an agitator that is disposed inside the drum for activating the laundry.
[0002] In washing machines, the mechanical effect is also important in cleaning the laundry besides water, detergent and temperature. In horizontal axis washing machines, the laundries are carried upwards by means of the vanes disposed on the inner wall of the drum. The laundry, carried by the vanes, as the drum rotates falls into the detergent containing water after being lifted up to a certain height. The detergent water detaches the dirt by passing through the pores between the fibers of the laundry impacting the detergent water with a speed that is the resultant of the falling and rotation speeds.
[0003] As the diameter of the drum and hence the amount of laundry placed in the drum increases, it becomes difficult to lift the laundry close to the drum axis by the vanes. In this case, a mechanical motion has to be given to the laundry remaining in the center of the drum in order to increase the washing effectiveness.
[0004] In the conventional technique, various types of agitators are explained that extend into the drum for agitating the laundry in order to increase the washing effectiveness in horizontal or vertical axis washing machines.
[0005] In the state of the art document no. GB975116, a washing machine is explained that comprises two pulleys and a belt for rotating the drum and the agitator.
[0006] The aim of the present invention is the realization of a washing machine comprising an agitator that can rotate in the same or opposite direction of the drum.
[0007] The washing machine realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, comprises an agitator, the rotational direction of which can be changed by means of a transfer unit according to the washing or spinning step, depending on the motion of the drum rotating with the belt-pulley system.
[0008] Accordingly, the agitator rotating in the opposite direction of the drum during the washing step, increases the mechanical effect enabling the laundry to be washed more effectively. During the spinning step, the agitator rotates in the same direction as the drum, preventing the laundry from damages.
[0009] The transfer unit comprises an additional pulley, moving connected to the drum pulley, having the same diameter as the agitator pulley and a transmission element moving between the additional pulley and the drum pulley, for activating a transfer shaft that transmits the motion of the drum pulley to the agitator pulley.
[0010] The transmission element is beared on a platform and is actuated by the control unit, controlling the operation of the washing machine, driving a small DC motor such that the transmission element on the platform contacts with the outer surface of the additional pulley or the inner surface of the drum pulley. In the case that the transmission element contacts the inner surface of the drum pulley (during the washing step) the agitator is enabled to rotate in the opposite direction of the drum. In the case that the transmission element contacts the outer surface of the additional pulley (during the spinning step) the agitator is enabled to rotate in the same direction as the drum.
[0011] As a result of arranging the drum pulley, additional pulley and the agitator pulley coaxially and within one another, less space is occupied, moreover in washing machines using belt pulley systems, the rotation of the agitator can be determined according to the drum movement.
[0012] A washing machine realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:
[0013] Figure 1 - is the schematic view of a washing machine.
[0014] Figure 2 - is the schematic view of the drum pulley and the agitator wheel during the washing process.
[0015] Figure 3 - is the schematic view of the drum pulley and the agitator wheel during the spinning process.
[0016] Figure 4 - is the perspective view of the embodiment of the present invention.
[0017] Figure 5 - is the perspective view of the transfer unit. [0018] Figure 6 - is the perspective view of the transfer unit together with the additional pulley. [0019] The elements illustrated in the figures are numbered as follows:

[0020] The washing machine (1) comprises a drum (2) wherein the laundry is emplaced, an agitator (3) that extends from the rear wall of the drum (2) towards the inside for activating the laundry, a motor (4) and a drum belt (8) - drum pulley (9) that transfers the motion of the motor (4) to the drum (2) for rotating the drum (2), an agitator belt (10) and agitator pulley (11) for rotating the agitator (3), and a transfer unit (13) that transfers the motion of the drum belt (8) and the drum pulley (9) to the agitator belt (10) and the agitator pulley (11) for rotating the agitator (3) in the same or opposite direction of the drum (2).
[0021] The transfer unit (13) comprises a circular additional pulley (15), disposed on the drum pulley (9), coaxially with the drum pulley (9), having approximately the same diameter as the agitator pulley (11) and rotating together with the drum (2), a transmission element (12) contacting the inner surface of the drum pulley (9) or the outer surface of the additional pulley (15) by moving between the additional pulley (15) and the drum pulley (9), rotating around its own axis according to the rotational direction (same or opposite) of the surface it contacts, a transfer means (17) disposed between the transmission element (12) and the transfer shaft (7) and transfers the rotational motion of the transmission element (12) around its axis to the transfer shaft (7) and a transfer shaft (7) that reverses the rotational motion of the transmission element (12) and transfers to the agitator belt (10) and the agitator pulley (11).
[0022] The rotation of the additional pulley (15), connected to the drum pulley (9), and hence of the drum (2) is transferred to the agitator pulley (11) and the agitator (3) by means of the transfer unit (13). Thus, when the transmission element (12) contacts the inner surface of the drum pulley (9), the transmission element (12) rotates in the same direction as the drum (2), however the motion reversed by the transfer shaft (7) is transferred to the agitator belt (10) and the agitator pulley (11) and as a result the agitator (3) rotates in the opposite direction of the drum (2). When the transmission element (12) contacts the outer surface of the additional pulley (15), the transmission element (12) rotates in the opposite direction of the additional pulley (15), and the motion reversed by the transfer shaft (7) is transferred to the agitator belt (10) and the agitator pulley (11) and rotating the agitator (3) in the same direction as the drum (2).
[0023] The washing machine (1) comprises a drum shaft (5) forming the rotational axis of the drum (2) by bearing on the drum pulley (9). The drum pulley (9) is rotated by the drum belt (8), disposed between the drum pulley (9) and the motor (4), transferring the motion of the motor (4) to the drum pulley (9) and the drum (2) is rotated by the drum shaft (5) bearing on the drum pulley (9) and rotating together with the drum pulley (9).
[0024] The washing machine (1) furthermore comprises an agitator shaft (6) disposed inside the drum shaft (5), coaxially with the drum shaft (5). The agitator shaft (6) is connected to the agitator pulley (11). The agitator (3) is secured on the end of the agitator shaft (6) that passes from the rear wall of the drum (2) and extends inwards. The agitator pulley (11) that is disposed on the rear of the drum (2) coaxially with the drum pulley (9) and preferably having a smaller diameter than the drum (2), rotates by means of the agitator belt (10) mounted between the transfer shaft (7) and the agitator pulley (11) at the transfer unit (13) thereby rotating the agitator (3).
[0025] The transfer unit (13) furthermore comprises a platform (16) whereon the transmission element (12) bears, moving between the drum pulley (9) and the additional pulley (15) providing thereof to contact one of the two pulleys (9 or 15) and a driver (14) that actuates the platform (16). The driver (14) is a small DC motor and is actuated by the control unit that controls the washing machine (1). The driver (14) is energized by the control unit, depending on the washing or the spinning step, and platform (16) is activated so that the transmission element (12) thereon contacts the drum pulley (9) or the additional pulley (15).
[0026] The motor (4) starts to operate when the washing machine (1) is operated by the user upon selecting the washing program. The movement of the motor (4) is transferred to the drum shaft (5) by the drum belt (8) - drum pulley (9) and to the drum (2) mounted to the drum shaft (5) thereby rotating the drum (2).
[0027] During the washing step, the platform (16) and the transmission element (12) thereon, shifted to the first position by the driver (14), contact the inner surface of the drum pulley (9). In this position, the transmission element (12) rotates in the same direction as the drum pulley (9). This rotation of the transmission element (12) maintains the transfer shaft (7) to rotate in the opposite direction. The agitator belt (10), connected to the transfer shaft (7) by the agitator pulley (11), transfers the motion received from the transfer shaft (7) to the agitator pulley (11). As a result of this motion, the agitator shaft (6) bearing on the agitator pulley (11) and the agitator (3) mounted to the agitator shaft (6) rotate in the opposite direction of the drum (2). Rotating the agitator (3) disposed in the drum (2) in the opposite direction of the drum (2) during washing increases the mechanical effect thereby the laundry can be washed effectively (Figure 2). [0028] During the spinning step, the driver (14) changes the platform (16) and the transmission element (12) to the second position. In this position, the transmission element (12) contacts the outer surface of the additional pulley (15), mounted to the drum pulley (9) and rotating together with the drum pulley (9). In this position, the transmission element (12) rotates in the opposite direction of the drum pulley (9). This rotation of the transmission element (12) maintains the transfer shaft (7) to rotate in the opposite direction and the transfer shaft (7) rotates in the same direction as the drum pulley (9). The agitator belt (10) connected to the transfer shaft (7) by the agitator pulley (11) transfers the motion received from the transfer shaft (7) to the agitator pulley (11). As a result of this motion, the agitator shaft (6) bearing on the agitator pulley (11) and the agitator (3) mounted to the agitator shaft (6) rotate in the same direction as the drum (2). Rotating the agitator (3) disposed in the drum (2) in the same direction as the drum (2) during the spinning step prevents the laundry from being damaged (Figure 3).
[0029] By means of the present invention, in washing machines (1) wherein the drum (2) is rotated by a belt - pulley mechanism, the agitator (3) is rotated depending on the motion of the drum (2). Thus, the laundry emplaced in the drum (2) in big diameter drums (2) can be washed more effectively since the mechanical motion in the drum (2) is increased.
