Abstract

Provided are an illuminating device which suitably cools a fluorescent lamp, and a liquid crystal display device. A cold cathode fluorescent lamp (205) having a light emitting section and an electrode section is arranged in a case (201). Slit-like suction holes (201a) are formed on the top and bottom side surfaces of the case (201) at positions facing the light emitting section of the cold cathode fluorescent lamp (205). Exhaust holes (201c) are formed adjacent to the electrode section of the cold cathode fluorescent lamp (205), on the bottom surface of the case (201). An exhaust fan (213) is arranged outside the case (201). External air is taken in through the suction holes (201a) by the exhaust fan (213) and exhausted through the exhaust holes (201c). At this time, the light emitting section and the electrode section are cooled by air that passes through.
