Description

METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR PREPARING FEED
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention generally relates to a method and a system for preparing feed.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Chopped forage or other agricultural products, particularly for livestock, are known to be ensiled at the green state in storage silos or in stacks on the ground at the production site and compressed so as to let out as much air as possible, and then to be covered with plastic sheeting, in order to protect the ensiled material, as well as to prevent air penetration, so that harmful surface fermentation may be avoided and only the so-called low fermentation, caused by a lactic fermentation flora consisting of anaerobic microorganisms, can take place.
Nevertheless, it has been noticed that covers used until present for these ensiled products do not satisfactorily fulfill their function when they are permeable to air, and particularly to oxygen, and that they do not prevent the ensiled material from fermenting or do not limit the fermentation of this material to the effect of anaerobic microorganisms only.
In particular, ensiled forage seems to be left at least partly uncovered during intermediate storing of the feed, i.e. from the end of the ensiling process until the ensiled feed is used for preparing feed in connection with feeding. It has been noted that such intermediate storing may have a negative effect on the quality of the feed; harmful surface fermentation of the ensiled feed may take place. Further, if the forage is ensiled in storage silos it has to be transported from the production site to the storage silo and then again to the feed preparation/feeding site. Such transportation causes also a deterioration of the fodder product.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method and a system, respectively, for preparing feed, which avoid or at least mitigate the problems associated with the prior art.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide such method and system, which can be partly or fully automated.
It is a further object of the invention to provide such method and system, which are efficient, accurate, precise, flexible, fast, uncomplicated, reliable, simple, cost effective, and/or easy to implement and use.
The above objects, among others, are according to the present invention attained by methods and systems as specified in the appended patent claims.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a method for preparing feed, according to which a storage unit, preferably an essentially airtight collapsible plastic unit such as e.g. an agbag, in which an ensiled feed substance is housed, is loaded on a loading platform. The ensiled feed substance is intermediately stored in the storage unit on the loading platform and amounts of the ensiled feed substance are automatically and repeatedly separated from the loading platform. Preferably, the feed substance is ensiled and intermediately stored before feed preparation in a single package. By such a method it can be ensured that ensiled feed is handled in a cost effective manner with a minimum risk of undesired surface fermentation of the ensiled feed.
Advantageously, the ensiled feed substance is ensiled in the storage unit at one physical location and the ensiled feed substance is subsequently moved directly to another physical location, at which the ensiled feed substance is intermediately stored on the loading platform and at which the amount of the ensiled feed substance is separated.
Hereby, the additional transport of the feed to a particular ensiling site is avoided. The feed is ensiled where it is grown and is then directly transported to the site where the feed is prepared and optionally where the feeding is taking place.
In one embodiment of the invention the above method is performed as part of a method for preparing mixed feed according to a selected recipe. The above platform is arranged adjacent several other loading platforms, wherein each of the several platforms is provided for intermediately storing a respective feed ingredient. A selected amount of each of the feed ingredients is separated from the respective loading platform depending on the selected recipe in connection with the automatic separation of the amount of the ensiled feed substance. The amount of the ensiled feed substance is also selected depending on the selected recipe. The separated amounts of feed ingredients are then automatically transported to an automatic mixing device, wherein the feed ingredients are mixed.
Hereby, entirely automated mixed feed preparation is obtained with a minimum of transportation and air contact for the ensiled feed ingredient. According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a system implementing the inventive method.
Further characteristics of the invention, and advantages thereof, will be evident from the following detailed description of embodiments of the invention given hereinafter and the accompanying Figs. 1-3, which are given by way of illustration only, and thus are not limitative of the present invention.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Fig. 1 is a schematic view of a system for preparing feed according to an embodiment of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a schematic flowchart of a method for preparing feed according to a further embodiment of the invention.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
A system for preparing feed, which is shown in Fig. 1, comprises a storage unit 1, a loading platform 5, and separating means such as a cutter 7.
The storage unit 1 is provided for housing a harvested feed or animal fodder substance 3, such as chopped silage, grass, or maize, during ensilage thereof, and is a collapsible unit, cover, or wrapper, preferably an insulating single- or multilayer plastic cylindrical collapsible unit such as e.g. an agbag, which is essentially airtight during the essential part of the ensiling of the feed substance. The airtight cover prevents the fermentation of the ensiled material or to limit it to a lactic fermentation caused by anaerobic microorganisms. Storage units of the above kind, which can be used in the present invention, include those described in US Pat. Nos . 6,610,377; 4,424,051; 4,337,805; 4,310,036 and 4,308,901, the contents of which being hereby incorporated by reference.
The loading platform 5 is provided for intermediately storing the ensiled feed substance 3 in the collapsible storage unit 1 and is typically a loading platform as used in larger feed mixing arrangements
Further, the loading platform may be equipped with holding parts or members 9 provided for holding the collapsible storage unit 1 in a fixed position, and a feeding-forward device 11 provided for feeding the ensiled feed substance 3 forward with respect to the collapsible storage unit 1, thereby unwrapping the ensiled feed substance, prior to separation of amounts of the ensiled feed substance 3. If the collapsible storage unit 1 is cylindrical or cylinder symmetric in shape the feeding forward of the ensiled feed substance 3 is advantageously performed along a longitudinal axis of the collapsible storage unit 1 as being shown by the arrow in Fig. 1. Several different kinds of holding members 9 and feeding-forward devices 11 readily achievable by a person skilled in the art can be used with the present invention. The holding members 9 may be realized as comprising hooks, clips, or similar, for holding, and the feeding-forward device 11 may be realized as comprising a piston or plunger, or as comprising a conveyor belt.
The separating means or cutter 7 is provided for automatically and repeatedly separating an amount of the ensiled feed substance 3 from the loading platform 5. Several different kinds of cutter devices can be used with the present invention, of which some are disclosed in US Pat. Nos. 6,505,786 and 5,033,684 and in EP Publication Nos. 0 506 158 A; EP 0 779 027 A; and EP 359 482 A, the contents of which being hereby incorporated by reference.
In order to obtain a fully automated system the cutter 7, the holding members 9, and the feeding-forward device 11 may be connected to a control device 12, which is provided for controlling the cutter 7, the holding members 9, and the feeding-forward device 11 according to a selected algorithm.
A method for preparing feed according to an embodiment of the invention is next described with reference to the flowchart of Fig. 2 and the feed preparation system of Fig. 1.
The feed substance 3 is harvested and optionally chopped, and is covered by the collapsible storage unit 1 and the harvested feed substance 3 is in a step 101 ensiled therein. This is preferably made at a first physical location A, which is identical with or close to the place of harvesting. When the ensilage is terminated or close thereto, the collapsible storage unit 1 is in a step 103 loaded on the loading platform 5 and the ensiled feed substance 3 is a step 105 intermediately stored until it should be used for feeding one or several animals. Preferably, before the ensiled feed substance is intermediately stored, it is moved to a second physical location B, which is remote from the first physical location A. To this end the loading platform 5 is fit to a wagon that can be drawn by a tractor or other vehicle. Alternatively, the loading platform is provided with wheels. Advantageously, the second physical location B is located in connection with or within an arrangement for housing animals or close to an automatic feed mixer or feeding device, such as a feed wagon or a mixer wagon. Whenever requested, an amount of the ensiled feed substance 3 is in a step 107 automatically separated or cut from the loading platform 5 by means of the separating means 7, still preferably at the second physical location B. Then animals are then fed with the prepared feed.
The amount of the ensiled feed substance 3 may be cut in response to a feeding request sent from the control device 12. Preferably, the ensiled feed substance 3 is cut prior, preferably immediately prior, to feeding at least one animal with the cut amount of the feed substance. This is to avoid any undesired contact between the ensiled feed substance 3 and air, thereby preventing undesirable surface fermentation.
The cutting is preferably made at each instant at a fixed longitudinal position and the ensiled feed substance 3 is prior to cutting fed forward while the collapsible storage unit 1 itself is held in a fixed position.
The surface 3a of the ensiled feed substance 3, which was exposed as a result of cutting the amount of the ensiled feed substance, is preferably covered after the cutting by the cutter 7 itself (provided that the cutter 7 is large enough), or by any other kind of cover.
The separated amount of the ensiled feed substance 3 may then in a step 109 be automatically transported to a mixing device, wherein the separated amount of the ensiled feed substance 3 is in a step 111 mixed with other feed ingredients. Alternatively, the separated amount of the ensiled feed substance 3 is fed to a feeding device for feeding animal(s) with the separated amount of the ensiled feed substance 3. It shall be appreciated that the step 101 may not form part of the present invention. The ensiled feed may be bought in the storage unit 1 and then loaded on the loading platform 5.
With reference next to Fig. 3, a system for preparing mixed feed according to a selected recipe comprises the system of Fig. 1 and further a mixing device 13 such as a stationary or movable automatic mixing device, a plurality of further loading platforms 5a-e, each of which being provided for intermediate storage of a respective feed ingredient 3a-e, and automatic transporting means such as a conveyer belt 15 including a weighing device 17 for weighing feed ingredients. The weighing device 17 may be arranged for weighing while the conveyor belt 15 is standing still (static weighing) or when the conveyor belt 15 is moving (dynamic weighing) .
The control device 12 is connected to the mixing device 13 and the conveyer belt 15 to control their operations. The weighing device is connected to the control device 12 to provide the control device with measured weights.
The method described above with reference to Fig. 2 may be extended by preparing mixed feed according to the selected recipe by the system of Fig. 3 to include the following steps. Each of the plurality of feed ingredients is intermediately stored on a respective loading platform 5, 5a-e. The ensiled feed substance is thus one feed ingredient among others. On request an amount of each of the feed ingredients 3, 3a-e is automatically separated from the respective loading platform 5, 5a-e and is allowed to fall down onto the conveyor belt 15 depending on the selected recipe. Here, also the automatic separation of the amount of the ensiled feed substance is made depending on the selected recipe. The cutter 7 may be movable along the loading platforms 5, 5a-e to be used for separation of several feed ingredients. Alternatively, some or each of the loading platforms 5a-e are/is provided with individual separation or portioning arrangements.
Similarly, the feeding-forward device 7, and optionally the holding members 9, may be movable along the loading platforms 5, 5a-e to be used for feeding forward several feed ingredients. Alternatively, some or each of the loading platforms 5a-e are/is provided with individual feeding-forward arrangements .
If required each amount separated is weighed e.g. on the conveyor belt 15 and if the amount is less than required for the selected recipe a further smaller amount of the feed ingredient is separated and weighed. This procedure may be repeated, for each of the feed ingredients, until a sufficient amount of the respective feed ingredient is received on the conveyor belt 15.
The separated amounts of feed ingredients are then automatically transported to the mixing device 13 (direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3) and the amounts of feed ingredients are automatically mixed in the mixing device 13. The mixed feed can then be supplied to animals for consumption.
While the present invention has been described in the above embodiments it is readily apparent for a person skilled in the art that the invention may be implemented and practiced in other embodiments falling within the scope of the appended patent claims.
