Abstract

An unmanned floating processing unit for use in the production of oil or gas in marine environments has: mooring means for mooring the unit; separator means for separating gas or water from extracted oil or gas flowing into the unit from a riser; a storage buffer for oil or gas; a coupling whereby the shuttle tanker can offload oil or gas from the storage buffer; and flow control means to slow or shut down extraction of oil and gas responsive to the remaining capacity of the storage buffer. The corresponding method comprises separating gas or water from extracted oil or gas in an unmanned floating processing unit; storing the oil or gas in a storage buffer for subsequent offload; and slowing or shutting down extraction of oil and gas responsive to the remaining capacity of the storage buffer.
