Abstract

A technique for producing a nitride-based fluorescent material comprising a matrix crystal made of a multinary nitride or oxynitride containing two or more metal or semimetal elements. At least one of the elemental substances of the elements constituting the matrix crystal, compounds of the elements constituting the matrix crystal, and alloys of the constituent elements is mixed with a raw material comprising at least one member selected among elements functioning as luminescence centers and compounds of these elements so that the proportions of the constituent elements excluding nitrogen are equal to the proportions in a target composition. The resultant mixture is subjected to a self-propagating combustion reaction in an atmosphere containing nitrogen to produce a nitride-based fluorescent material comprising a matrix crystal made of a multinary nitride or oxynitride. Thus, a nitride-based fluorescent material having excellent stability and a high luminance is efficiently synthesized from inexpensive materials in a short time. This technique has excellent profitability. Also provided is the product of the process.
