Abstract

 本発明は、電気光学効果を有する薄板と、前記薄板に形成された光導波路と、前記光導波路を通過する光を制御するための制御電極とを有する光制御素子において、前記制御電極に印加されるマイクロ波信号と前記光との速度整合や、前記マイクロ波のインピーダンス整合、駆動電圧の低減及び高速動作を可能とするという課題を達成するものである。前記課題を達成するため、本発明の光制御素子の前記制御電極は、前記薄板の上側に信号電極と接地電極を配置し、前記薄板の下側には、前記信号電極の幅よりも大きく、前記信号電極の長さ方向全体に亘って形成された低屈折率層を介して、接地電極を含む第2電極を配置する構成とする。
