Abstract

A liquid crystal display device is provided with two liquid crystal panels (first and second panels) for displaying images in accordance with video source signals and a plurality of polarizers (A, B, C) (polarizing light absorption layers), wherein the panels and the polarizers are laid to overlap each other and the polarizers are held between the liquid crystal panels to set a cross-Nicol relation. With respect to gray scale values of image data to display an image on the second panel, the liquid crystal display device is further provided with a gray scale value converting unit (422) that converts the gray scale values, so that major portions of all bit numbers to express the gray scale values are allocated to the image data that belong to a low gray scale region.
