Description
i
CUTTING UNIT FOR A ROTATING MILLING HEAD
The present invention relates firstly to a cutting unit for a rotating milling head, comprising a cutting plate which is designed to be mounted on a cutting plate holder, and means for moving the cutting plate and the cutting plate holder radially with respect to one another. Secondly, the present invention relates to a rotating milling head, preferably a toothed rotating milling head, provided with such a cutting unit.
Rotating (toothed) milling heads are known per se and are provided on a milling device by means of which different materials from the metal-, wood- or plastic-processing industry can be machined (cut) .
The milling head is provided with several, usually four, longitudinal recesses into which in each case one cutting unit is placed.
In order to allow a number of resharpening cycles to be carried out and to prevent the cutting plate holder from being ground during the grinding process of the cutting plate, the present cutting units are provided with means which allow the cutting plate and cutting plate holder to be moved radially with respect to one another. Such cutting units are described, inter alia, in US patent US 5 658 101 and German Utility Model DE 20 2006 010 967 Ul.
In order to move the cutting plate and cutting plate holder radially with respect to one another, the cutting
plate and cutting plate holder described in US 5 658 101 are provided with a microtoothing. However, this solution has the drawback that it is difficult to set the various cutting units provided on the milling head to the same position (cutting diameter) , as, due to the close toothing, in some cases a tooth is skipped during radial movement .
According to DE 20 2006 010 967, the side edges of the cutting plate are provided with a serrated profiling and the holder has a pin which fits into this profiling.
Plate and holder are moved radially with respect to one another by placing the holder and pin in the next
"serration". This solution has the drawback that the combination is difficult to mount, is not self-clamping and is, moreover, less accurate.
It is an object of the invention to provide a cutting unit whose cutting plate and cutting plate holder can be moved radially with respect to one another in a simple and accurate manner.
The object of the invention is achieved by providing a cutting unit for a rotating milling head comprising a cutting plate which is designed to be mounted on a cutting plate holder, and means for moving the cutting plate and the cutting plate holder radially with respect to one another, in which said means comprise at least one rotatable positioning element which is designed to move the cutting plate and the cutting plate holder into different positions with respect to one another. Such a
cutting unit can be mounted quickly and allows an accurate radial movement of the cutting plate. As said positioning element allows the cutting plate to be positioned in a number of fixed positions with respect to the holder, it is very easy to set the various cutting units provided on the milling head to the same position (cutting diameter) .
In a preferred embodiment of the cutting unit according to the invention, the positioning element is rotatably connected to the cutting plate holder and the positioning element is mounted rotatably in an opening provided in the cutting plate.
In a more preferred embodiment of the cutting unit according to the invention, the cutting plate holder is provided with a recess which adjoins the opening which is provided in the cutting plate, and in which the positioning element is mounted rotatably.
In the most preferred embodiment of the cutting unit according to the invention, the positioning element comprises a retaining element to keep the cutting plate and the cutting plate holder in a set position. More particularly, the retaining element is designed to secure the cutting plate and the cutting plate holder radially and axially, so that providing such a retaining element offers the advantage that the set position of the cutting plate with respect to the cutting plate holder is secured both axially and radially.
In a particular embodiment of the cutting unit according to the invention, the number of positions which can be set is determined by the shape of the positioning element, the shape of the recess and the shape of the opening. In particular, the radial movement is determined by the distance of the various shapes with respect to one another.
Another subject this patent application relates to is a rotating milling head, in particular a toothed milling head, designed for receiving at least one cutting unit as described above. This type of cutting unit is suitable for relatively high cutting speeds as the system can cope with a relatively large centrifugal force.
The present invention furthermore relates to a milling device which is provided with a rotating milling head according to the invention.
In order to explain the characteristics of the present invention in more detail and to indicate the additional advantages and features thereof, a more detailed description of a cutting unit according to the invention is given below. It will be clear that nothing in the description below can be interpreted as limiting the scope of protection claimed in the claims .
In this description, reference numerals are used to refer to the attached drawings, in which: - Figures 1 and 2 show an exploded view of a cutting unit according to the invention;
Figure 3 shows a representation of the various positions which can be set on the cutting unit illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 4 shows a representation of a rotating milling head provided with a cutting unit according to the invention.
The cutting unit (1) according to the present invention and as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a cutting plate (2) with a cutting face (9) which is designed to be mounted on a cutting plate holder (3) . The cutting plate
(2) may consist of various cutting materials, the cutting plate holder (3) is made of metal and both the cutting plate (2) and the cutting plate holder (3) have a substantially rectangular shape.
As the cutting face (9) of the cutting plate (2) will become blunt after a certain time due to wear and tear, it will be necessary to grind this cutting face on a regular basis. In order to prevent the cutting plate holder from being ground during the grinding process as well (time-consuming operation) and in order to allow a number of grinding cycles to be carried out, the cutting unit (1) furthermore comprises means to move the cutting plate (2) and the cutting plate holder (3) radially with respect to one another.
According to the present invention, these means comprise at least one rotatable positioning element (4) which is designed to move the cutting plate (2) and the cutting plate holder (3) to different positions with respect to
one another. The positioning element (4) is connected to the cutting plate holder (3) in a rotatable manner and is rotatably mounted in an opening (5) which is provided in the cutting plate (2) . Furthermore, the cutting plate holder (3) is provided with a recess (6) which adjoins the opening (5) provided in the cutting plate (2) . By designing the cutting unit (1) in this manner, an accurate radial displacement is achieved.
Each of the cutting units (1) illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 comprise two positioning elements (4) . By now rotating both positioning elements, the cutting plate (2) changes position with respect to the cutting plate holder (3) and the radial displacement of the cutting plate (2) is achieved.
In order to keep the cutting plate (2) and the cutting plate holder (3) in a set position, the positioning element (4) comprises a retaining element (7) in the form of a screw. In this manner, the cutting plate (2) is clamped to the cutting plate holder (3) and axially secured. This offers the advantage that the cutting plate (2) and cutting plate holder (3) remain together and do not come apart when the cutting unit (1) in a milling head has to be replaced.
The number of positions which can be set is determined by the shape of the positioning element (4), recess (6) and opening (5) and by the way in which they interact with one another. Thus, four different positions can be set with the cutting unit (1) illustrated in Figure 1, and
three different positions can be set with that illustrated in Figure 2. It goes without saying that different shapes of openings, positioning element and recess with which two, three, four or more positions can be set are also covered by the scope of protection of the present patent application.
The radial displacement of the cutting plate (2) with respect to the cutting plate holder (3) as a result of the rotation of the positioning element (4) is clearly indicated in Figure 3. In this case, the cutting unit (1) illustrated in Figure 1 and having four positions which can be set was used as the starting point. The initial position is illustrated in Fig. 3a, then when the cutting face becomes blunt over the course of time, the retaining element (7) will first be loosened and both positioning elements (4) will be rotated as a result of which the cutting plate (2) will be radially displaced and reaches its second position (illustrated in Fig. 3b) . Following this displacement, the cutting plate (2) is clamped onto the holder (3) again via the retaining element (7) . This process is repeated again twice in this representation, until the cutting plate (2) is in its end position
(fourth position) (illustrated in Fig. 3d) in which the maximum radial displacement is reached. When the cutting face becomes blunt in this (fourth) position, the cutting unit (1) has to be replaced.
As illustrated in Figure 4, the cutting units (1) according to the invention are provided on a rotating toothed milling head (8) . To this end, the milling head
(8) comprises several, in this case four, longitudinal recesses in which the cutting unit (1) according to the invention can be accommodated (in Figure 4 only two cutting units are fitted) . The cutting unit (1) is mounted in the recess between a clamping fixture (10) and a toothing provided in this recess. The toothing provided in the recess fits in a toothing provided on the cutting plate holder (3) . The assembly is securely clamped by means of bolt connections (11) which press the clamping fixture (10) against the cutting plate (2) and lock the toothing of the cutting plate holder (3) into the toothing of the recess.
By means of the type of cutting unit according to the invention, it is possible to reach cutting speeds which are higher than the usual values .
