- the channel loyalty module 22 is preferably operationally connected to the receive module 20.
- the channel loyalty module 22 is generally operative to perform an action, on receipt of the first part of the remote control channel-change command signal (block 21) by the receive module 20, to encourage the viewer to: continue viewing the current TV channel; or view another TV channel owned by the owner of the current TV channel. Possible actions are described with reference to Figs. 2- 6. It will be appreciated by those ordinarily skilled in the art that other suitable actions are also possible.
- partial depression of one of the partially depressible buttons 24, sends the first part of the remote control channel-change command signal (block 21) to the receive module 20 triggering the channel loyalty module 22 to perform the action to encourage the viewer to continue viewing the current TV channel or view another TV channel owned by the owner of the current TV channel.
- buttons 24 may be replaced any suitable replacement button or buttons, as long as the user can register a desire to change TV channels and then actually change TV channels, corresponding to the first and second part of the remote control channel-change command signal.
- a channel change such as two or more numeric buttons, or a non-numeric channel change button followed by a numeric button or buttons
- depression of the first button will result in the first part of the remote control channel-change command signal (block 21) being sent to the receive module 20 and depression of a subsequent button(s) will result in the second part of the remote control channel-change command signal being sent to the receive module 20.
- the remote control device 18 may include a non-channel change button operative to send the first part of the remote control channel-change command signal (block 21) to the receive module 20 in order to trigger the channel loyalty module 22 to perform the action.
- Fig. 2 is a partly pictorial, partly block diagram view of the system 10 of Fig. 1 displaying an on-screen display 26 of a plurality of future programs 28.
- the action performed by the channel loyalty module 22 on receipt of the first part of the remote control channel-change command signal (block 21 of Fig. 1) by the receive module 20 typically includes displaying the on-screen display 26 on the display device 14.
- the on-screen display 26 preferably lists one or more programs 28 in the future program schedule of: the current channel; or another channel owned by the owner of the current channel.
- Fig. 3 is a partly pictorial, partly block diagram view of the system 10 of Fig. 1 displaying an on-screen display 30 requesting the viewer 12 not to leave the current channel or to move to another channel owned by the owner of the current channel.
- the action performed by the channel loyalty module 22 includes displaying the on-screen display 30 on the display device 14.
- the on-screen display 30 may be displayed alone or with the on-screen display 26 of Fig. 2 and/or with any suitable combination of the actions described herein with respect to Figs . 4-6.
- Fig. 4 is a partly pictorial, partly block diagram view of the system 10 of Fig. 1 displaying a different camera view 32 for a program currently being viewed by the viewer 12.
- the channel loyalty module 22 may perform an action including displaying the different camera view 32.
- Methods of providing different camera views are known to those ordinarily skilled in the art, such as the method described in PCT Published Patent Application WO 2004/040896 of NDS Limited.
- the action may include replacing a currently playing advertisement by another advertisement in order to encourage continued viewing of the current channel.
- Fig. 5 is a partly pictorial, partly block diagram view of the system 10 of Fig. 1 offering the viewer a financial incentive to continue viewing the current channel until a certain time.
- the action performed by the channel loyalty module 22 may include offering the viewer a financial incentive, via an on-screen display 34, to continue viewing the current channel until a certain time, for example, but not limited to, the end of the program currently being viewed by the viewer 12.
- the financial incentive may include: a credit to the account of the viewer 12; a free pay-per- view program; a discount for a pay-per-view program; a discount for a product sold via the TV system or elsewhere; or a free gift when purchasing a certain product, by way of example only.
- FIG. 6 is a partly pictorial, partly block diagram view of the system 10 of Fig. 1 opening a dialogue 36 between the viewer 12 and an owner of the channel to negotiate a price for the continued viewing by the viewer 12 of the current channel.

- the dialogue between the viewer 12 and a representative 40 of the owner of the current channel is typically implemented via an Internet link 38 from the set-top box 16 to the representative 40.
- the Internet link 38 may be replaced by any suitable communication link, for example, but not limited to, cable, wireless, or telephone connection.
- the action performed by the channel loyalty module 22 may include skipping ahead or fast forwarding within a program, for example, but not limited to, skipping to a subsequent, previously recorded, news item or scene in a soap opera or film.
- the action performed by the channel loyalty module 22 may include
- the channel loyalty module 22 may always select the same action or combination of actions by default, independently of any other factor such as the channel, program, user or time. Alternatively, the channel loyalty module 22 may select any appropriate action or combination of actions based on one or more of the following factors: the selected channel, the program being viewed, the scene or part of a program being viewed, the current time, the viewer's user profile and the viewing history of the viewer.
- the appropriate action(s) may be signaled by the content provider to the channel loyalty module 22 using signaling methods known to those skilled in the art, for example, but not limited to, including signaling data within Entitlement Control Messages (ECMs), Event Information data, or metadata broadcast via the content provider or received by other methods known to those skilled in the art, for example, but not limited to, via an Internet connection or via a return channel.
- ECMs Entitlement Control Messages
- Event Information data or metadata broadcast via the content provider or received by other methods known to those skilled in the art, for example, but not limited to, via an Internet connection or via a return channel.
- the type of the current content providing site may be different from the type of the other content providing site.
- the current content providing site may be a TV channel and the other content providing site may be a website or vice-versa.
- FIG. 7 is a partly pictorial, partly block diagram view of the system of Fig. 1 showing the viewer 12 releasing the partially depressible button 24 of the remote control 18.
- the remote control device 18 is preferably operative such that releasing the partially depressible button 24 from being partially depressed results in the display device 14 continuing to display the current channel on the display device 14. If the remote control device 18 does not include the partially depressible buttons 24 for channel changing functions, in order to continue viewing the current channel, the viewer 12 does not continue pressing the remote control key combinations) associated with channel changing.
- Fig. 8 is a partly pictorial, partly block diagram view of the system 10 of Fig. 1 showing the viewer 12 fully depressing the partially depressible button 24 of the remote control 18 thereby causing the remote control device 18 to send the second part of the remote control channel change command signal (block 42) to the receive module 20, thereby effecting a channel change to be displayed on the display device 14.
- the remote control device 18 does not include the partially depressible buttons 24 for channel changing functions, in order to effect a channel change, the viewer 12 continues pressing the remaining remote control key combination(s) associated with channel changing.
- software components of the present invention may, if desired, be implemented in ROM (read only memory) form.
- the software components may, generally, be implemented in hardware, if desired, using conventional techniques.
