Abstract

Provided is a smoking article and method for reducing TPM cytotoxicity and targeted constituents in mainstream smoke. The smoking article (10) includes tobacco material (12) including a salt of a lanthanide metal (14). The method includes combining a salt of a lanthanide metal (14), water, and optionally glycerin to produce a solution that is applied to tobacco material (12). Preferably, the salt is an acetate, a sulfate, or a gluconate.
