Abstract

The present invention relates to a utility computing system and in particular, to a utility computing system adapted for convergence platform for data, video and voice access and utility. The utility computing system is adapted to favour wide scale computer based applications and data access utility ranging from simple productivity suites and internet browsing to complex usage such as streaming multi media or information and entertainment. The system (OS) over dispersed physical location.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS received by the International Bureau on 3 July 2008 (03.07.2008)
1. A utility computing system adapted for convergence platform for data, video and voice access and utility comprising: user (customer) premise equipment having a heavy computing processor core or processor, like a Digital Signal Processor (DSP), and a low computing processor or core; remote processing unit comprising a set of servers adapted to provide variety of computing facilities, like access to applications and data storage ; network means adapted to operatively connect the said user (customer) premise equipment to the said remote processing unit; said user (customer) premise equipment adapted to interact with said set of servers adapted to provide variety of computing facilities in said remote processing unit through network interface thereby providing utility computing access to said servers for computing facilities to user specific home/business utility computing; and said customer premise equipment having a low processing ability interface core or processor providing for interface between the user and the network and the input-output peripherals and a high processing ability core or processor providing for the decoding and decompressing of audio-video data from said servers.

A utility computing system according to claim 1 wherein said user (customer) premise equipment comprises an interface processor adapted to collect user inputs from the different peripherals/input devices and a core processor adapted to carry out decompression and decoding of the compressed and encoded computation and multimedia data, said core processor further adapted to control the output devices including output through audio-visual formats.

3. A utility computing system according to claim 2 wherein said user (customer) premise equipment comprises decoders with audio-video synchronization embedded therein adapted to favour reducing the bandwidth requirement between remote processing unit and the CPE.

A utility computing system according to claim 1 wherein said network connecting said user (customer) premises equipment to said remote processing unit comprises selectively provided network preferably selected from metro Ethernet ,DSL/ADSL for Wide Area Network (WAN), Wireless Networks preferably WiFi networks ranging from smaller area LANs to the Wider Area Wireless Mesh Networks.
5. A utility computing system according to claim 1 wherein said remote processing unit comprises set of servers adapted for internet applications, productivity applications and multimedia applications to provide variety of services to the end users (customers).
6. A utility computing system according to claim 5 wherein said remote processing unit comprises selectively one or more of Computing Server, Authentication Server, File Server,
Application Server, Entertainment Server, Billing Server, Advertisement and other services server and Administrative Server.

A utility computing system according to claim 6 wherein said entertainment server comprises of two sub-units (i) content server adapted to store all audio-video contents and (ii) entertainment portal server providing for the required portal enabling the user (customer) to browse through available entertainment and computing contents.

A utility computing system according to claim 6 wherein said billing server is adapted to track the user (customers) usage of different computing and entertainment services by interacting with the other servers like the advertisement and entertainment servers and the CPE to track the usage of content and utility for tracking both from the customer and service providers points of views.

A utility computing system according to claim 6 wherein said advertisement server is adapted for streamed appropriate advertisements to users to provide user (customers) locality based advertisement /facilities options by interacting with other components in the system to get awareness of the customer's usage, interests and locations and advertisements that fit into the above mentioned awareness are streamed to the customer.

A utility computing system according to claim 6 wherein said administrative server is adapted for anyone or more of (i) monitoring the status of the user (customer) premise equipment (ii) controlling the user (customer) premise equipment remotely (iii) monitoring the entire network (iv) monitoring and controlling the server components and (v) controlling user (Customer) facilities and management.

An user (customer) premise equipment adapted for convergence platform based data, video and voice access and utility comprising: a core heavy computing core or processor ; adapted for operative connection to a remote processing unit through network means; said user (customer) premise equipment adapted to interact with said set of servers in said remote processing unit adapted to provide variety of computing facilities in said remote
28 processing unit through network interface thereby providing utility computing access to said servers for computing facilities to user specific home/business utility computing; and a low processing ability interface core or processor providing for interface between the user and the network and the input-output peripherals and a high processing ability core or processor providing for the decoding and decompressing of audio-video data from said servers.

An user (customer) premise equipment according to claim 11 comprising an interface processor adapted to collect user inputs from the different peripherals/input devices and a core processor adapted to carry out decompression and decoding of the compressed and encoded computation and multimedia data, said core processor further adapted to control the output devices including output through audio-visual formats.
13. An user (customer) premise equipment according to claim 11 comprising decoders with audio-video synchronization embedded therein adapted to favour reducing the bandwidth requirement between remote processing unit and the CPE.
14. An user (customer) premise equipment according to claim 11 adapted to operate under very minimal power requirement of only about 5 W of steady state power.
15. A utility computing system adapted for convergence platform for data, video and voice access and utility and a user (customer) premise equipment for use in such system substantially as herein described and illustrated with reference to the accompanying figure.
