Abstract

A backlight device (21) having inner electrodes (35) arranged inside bulbs (32), respectively, and parallelly connected to a lighting circuit (40) for outputting an AC drive voltage, and the backlight device (21) also having an external electrode (36) placed outside the bulbs (32) with an air gap (41) between the electrode and the bulbs and grounded. Holding members (43A-43C) hold the bulbs (32) such that the distances (P1, P2) between adjacent bulbs (32) regularly vary in the direction of the arrangement of the bulbs (32).
