Abstract

A data signal processing apparatus comprises a coding means (110) for coding data in an error correcting coding system whose error correcting capability in decoding a code word bit string after the coding has difference for each code word bit string to generate the code word bit string and recording/reproducing means (140,150) for recording/reproducing a code word bit string generated by a recording/reproducing system in which error occurrence probability or signal-to-noise ratio in performing recording/reproducing varies with at least one of the place, order, and direction to be recorded/reproduced. The recording/reproducing means records/reproduces the generated code word bit string so that high and low levels of the error correcting capability and the size of the error occurrence probability or the signal-to-noise ratio have a predetermined correspondence relation. This makes it possible to record/reproduce the data so as to perform an efficient error correction.
