Definitions
- This invention relates to vehicles which are used to transport foods or other goods needing to be kept at cooler temperatures.
- the invention has a specific application to road transport where the width of a vehicle without special permissions, is constrained to a specific width.
- Commercial insulated and refrigerated road transport is an extremely competitive business and there is an ongoing challenge to achieve more storage volume within a refrigerated or an insulated area while maintaining as high as possible, insulation whilst legally being constrained to a maximum width determined by relevant road legislation.
- a traditional construction that currently exists uses a fibre reinforced plastic sheet as an outer most surface along each of sidewalls of a refrigerated transport unit.
- fibre reinforced plastic resin provides, by reason of its gel coat, an external surface that is both visually acceptable and is able to be kept ⁇ relatively clean easily, but at the same time, also has implicitly some insulation value.
- the upper structure is a sandwich of the materials described. This upper structure is fastened to a flat floor or airflow floor substructure.
- a strip which is secured on an outer most side of the plastic resin sheet and is secured by fasteners, such as rivets or bolts passing through the strip, in one case of by having the strip include a right angled teg which is then positioned to pass behind an edge of the sheet with the wall and the leg being secured by fastening means suc ⁇ as rivets, DOlts or glue to tne floor structure, the fibre reinforced plastic sheet and engaging with whatever the frame work structure is a part of the chassis of the vehicle but in one case is the floor structure of the arrangement.
- An object of this invention therefore is to provide an improvement in respect of the above problem.
- each side wall being located at a respective side of the vehicle and defining between the two sides a width of the vehicle for transport regulation purposes, each side wall having an outer most sheet or sheets of plastics material, and a strip being positioned and of a shape where it is engaging against and extending along an outermost surface of a lower edge of the sheet of plastics material with fastening means engaging a structural portion of the vehicle inwardly of the wall and effecting a holding and capture of the sheet or sheets by the strip thereby, the side wall having a shape where there is a portion which is inset from at least a substantial part of the rest of the wall, such inset portion being of a size and shape to provide for a nesting therein, of the said strip.
- a remainder of the fibre reinforced sheet can be extended further out so as to be either close to or generally co-planar with an outer most edge of the metal strip.
- this can then be filled by appropriate materials to assist in insulation, but it can also be used to assist in strengthening and in such a case, a multi-ply wood sheet or sheets can then be embedded behind the sheet in the location except where the strip is nesting.
- the wall structure includes an inner most wall of metal or fibre reinforced resin and, at least in the main, insulating materials between the outer most wall and the inner most wall.
- An advantage of the arrangement described is that the materials that are conventionally used and have been found to be acceptable can continue to be used and yet, there is this improved insulation at the least, or at least similar insulation levels, but with an improved internal width capacity that provides significant improvement in competitive advantage in relation to loading and unloading of refrigerated vehicles or insulated vehicles.
- insulated vehicle is not intended to be a limiting definition and can apply to a trailer, a motorised lorry, or any combination including a multiple number of trailers or a rigid chamber mounted on a fixed chassis vehicle
- the vehicle is a refrigerated road trailer.
- the rear wall has a door or doors opening Into the chamber.
- the sheet or sheets of plastic material are comprised of fibre reinforced plastics material.
- each respective side wall is comprised of composite sheet materials where at least an inner sheet is a sheet of multiply wood.
- the strip is a member of metal and of constant cross sectional shape along its length and its length is co-extensive with the length of the side of the side wall that it is capturing.
- a further strip positioned and of a shape where it is engaging against and extending along an outermost surface of a side edge of the sheet of plastics material with fastening means engaging a structural portion of the vehicle inwardly of the wall and effecting a holding and capture of the sheet or sheets by the strip thereby, the side wall having a shape where there is a portion which is inset from at least a substantial part of the rest of the wall, such inset portion being of a size and shape to provide for a nesting therein, of this further said strip.
- a further strip positioned and of a shape where it is engaging against and extending along an outermost surface of a top edge of the sheet of plastics material with fastening means engaging a structural portion of the vehicle inwardly of the wall and effecting a holding and capture of the sheet or sheets by the strip thereby, the side wall having a shape where there is a portion which is inset from at least a substantial part of the rest of the wall, such inset portion being of a size and shape to provide for a nesting therein, of this further said strip.
- the strip or strips are each of extruded aluminium alloy with an upper and lower stiffening rib and a web between the ribs set back from an extent of outward projection of the respective ribs, and there are fastening members which pass mutually through the web of the strip and the sheet material to engage with and be held to the inner structural material of the vehicle and where the fastening members are not proud of the ribs.
- each respective side wall includes an inner most wall of metal or fibre reinforced resin and, at least in the main, insulating materials between the outer most sheet and the inner most sheet defining the wall.
- the unit is expected to be a part of a total structure providing insulation where there might for instance, be rear doors which themselves provide some structural integrity to the total assembly.
- the invention can be said to reside in an arrangement where there is an external fibre reinforced resin outer most sheet, and this includes a shape providing a nesting position for an attaching strap or strip.
- the strip is an aluminium alloy extruded strip which has stiffening ribs extending along its length and a web across its centre between the respective ribs and any rivets or bolts that might be used, have a head or heads which when secured appropriately, will not be proud of any plane defining an outer most measurement provided by the stiffening ribs.
- FIG 1 is a perspective view of a semi trailer with a prime mover connected to a trailer which is in accord with an embodiment of this invention
- FIG 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the side wall of the trailer illustrating the arrangement according to a first embodiment
- FIG 3 is a side view in cross section of the side wall as in the first embodiment
- FIG 4 is an enlarged view of the most relevant portion as in Figure 3, is a side cross sectional view of the side wall as shown in the earlier drawings, and FIG 5 is a perspective view of a second embodiment where the side walls are fastened on each of the four edges.
- a vehicle 1 which in this case is a semi trailer including a prime mover 2 and a trailer 3.
- the issue in relation to the invention is to achieve a maximum of width within permissible road rules while at the same time, achieving substantial insulation at least for the walls where the dimensions become critical.
- the trailer 3 includes a vertical sidewall 4, a front wall 5, a roof 6, a vertical sidewall on the opposite side of a chamber 7 at 8 and rear doors
- the external surface of the chamber 7 providing these walls is provided by a relatively thin fibre reinforced resin sheet.
- Such a material is chosen to have a good external appearance as well as providing some insulation in being relatively strong as a thin shell.
- the strip 11 is comprised of extruded aluminium alloy having outwardly protruding ribs 12 and 13 to provide stiffness and a middle web 14 through which a rivet 15 is passed into a body of the chassis 16.
- the fibre reinforced resin wall 4 is recessed at 16 so that there is a bottom edge of the wall at 17, but this leaves a portion that by being recessed, allows the strip 11 to have an outer edge provided by respectively the portions 12 and 13 to be generally or approximately co-planar with an outer edge 19 of a remainder of the wall 4.
- insulation sheet 20 By having this recess 16 thereby provides a nesting shape for the metal strip but also there is achieved an additional thickness for insulation which in this case, is provided by insulation sheet 20.
- a remainder of the wall 4 includes conventional components including filled polyurethane foam 21 , an inner sheet 22 providing an inner wall, various structural portions including pult ⁇ jsion fillers such as at 23 and inset shapes such as at 24 which provide interlocking shapes for internal support for double loading platforms or tying of trolleys, bins or other materials holding goods.
- the insulation sheet 20 in this case is made from a multiply wood which is marine ply grade which is embedded behind the now outwardly extending portion of the wall 4 and it is this that provides the additional insulation which can be used either to reduce refrigeration costs or can otherwise be used to increase the inner width of the chamber with similar insulation figures as before.
- a vehicle 30 which is a semi trailer in his case with a prime mover 31 and a trailer 32
- the side wall 33 has an outer surface sheet 34 of fibre reinforced plastic resin and has along each of its edges 35,36, 37 and 38 strips shown at 40,41,42 and 43 each of which is positioned in a recessed portion at the edge of the wall so that each nests in this recess with therefore each strip and most of the outer surface of the sheet 34 have a similar outermost projection status thereby defining the outer width for road transport purposes.
- a strip in a further embodiment which is not shown in the drawings, includes a leg extending transversely to a first portion (which therefore is in the form of a right angled section) where the leg is used to hold the first portion by being secured by passing across an edge of the wall and being secured either by physical members such as rivets or bolts or by being glued to the structure of the insulated unit and the first portion is located to engage against an edge area of the sheet that is recessed.
- the fastening means are then provided by the leg of the strip and the further arrangement securing this to say a floor structure of the insulating unit.
- This then also achieves the advantage of allowing for the increased insulation of a remainder of the wall, by allowing the portion of the strip to be located in the recessed area in a nested fashion and having thereby the increased insulation available from a remainder of the wail.
