Abstract

Disclosed is a liquid crystal display device which can improve a response speed and can prevent the occurrence of the “image sticking” on a display. Also disclosed is a method for producing the liquid crystal display device. Further disclosed is an alignment film. The liquid crystal display device comprises a pair of substrates, a liquid crystal layer provided between the substrates, and an alignment film provided between one of the substrates and the liquid crystal layer. The alignment film is formed from a polymeric material having the main chain, two or more side chains each having a repeating structure, and an atomic group for binding the main chain to each of the side chains. The atomic group contains at least one chemical structure selected from those represented by the general formulae (1-1) to (1-4). The weight average molecular weight of each of the side chains in the polymeric material is three times or more greater than that of a liquid crystal molecule in the liquid crystal layer.
