Abstract

The invention provides a method for constructing a multi-storey building from modular panel components. Rigid load-bearing vertical pillars in the building are avoided, with the vertical loads being passed between (C)-profile structural uprights (12) made from cold-formed structural steel. Sleeve members (20) span the structure uprights of successive storeys, each sleeve member (12) comprising a portion received in the (C)-section of the structural upright of one storey and secured to that structural upright by bolts, by welding or by brazing to strengthen the (C)-profile structural member at its area of maximum potential weakness, and a portion protruding from the structural upright for precise axial location of the corresponding structural upright of the wall section of the storey above. The projecting portion of the sleeve member comprises a first portion (B), proximal to the structural upright (12) of the same external dimensions as those of the sleeve portion contained within the structural upright, and a second portion (C), distal to the structural upright (12), of progressively narrowing external dimensions in the distal direction for ease of location in the corresponding structural upright of the storey above.
