Abstract

Disclosed is a non-invasive method for obtaining measured data suitable for determining the total amount of hemoglobin of a lung breather. In said method, a predefined dose of a breathable tracer is set and is non-invasively fed to the lung breather via one of his or her mucous membranes, and absorption and/or elimination of the breathable tracer is determined at a plurality of points in time by non-invasively measuring a parameter that correlates with the amount of the tracer in the body of the lung breather. Also disclosed are a suitable apparatus as well as CO to be used or the use of CO in a corresponding (e.g. diagnostic) method. Adequate computing rules (illustrated in figure 6, for example) make it possible to automatically determine the total body hemoglobin concentration.
