The possible configurations will be presented to the user. For each configuration the available functions may be presented to the user, and differences and limitations can also be presented as well as suggested and recommended further devices, which are not (yet) present. The set top box may ask the user if he wants a standard configuration or a custom configuration where the user can influence the configuration by selecting or deselecting options that are offered.
  • the set top box When the user has accepted a configuration the set top box will display and illustrate on the screen step by step how to make each connection. This can be done by giving a description or showing an illustration of the actually needed cable and the socket on each of the devices to be interconnected by the cable. The user may then confirm to the set top box that this particular step has been performed, and the set top box will continue with the next step to be performed.
  • Figure 2 is illustrated an example of a system made up of selected ones of the individual devices shown in Figure 1, where some of the devices are not used for the particular configuration.
  • the user may wish to modify the configuration as shown in Figure 2 to leave some devices out and include other devices, or he may have acquired new devices with new functionalities to be included in the setup. He may then activate the setup wizard mode of the set top box to guide him through the procedure of setting up the new configuration. The user may also be given the choice of functionalities in the chosen configuration. Once the choice of configuration and functionalities has been made, the set top box can offer the user to automatically adopt the optimal settings of the individual devices to give the desired results. The user will thus only have a single source of information and only one source to consult to find guidance for setting up the system, and the user sees only an intelligent set-up wizard and not a complex collection of individual devices.

Abstract

La présente invention concerne un dispositif de contrôleur tel qu'un décodeur ou un ordinateur à interconnecter avec d'autres dispositifs pour former un système de dispositifs interconnectés, comme un système audiovisuel ou un système informatique. Selon les informations des autres dispositifs comprenant leurs entrées acceptées, leurs fonctions ou rôles que les autres dispositifs peuvent réaliser dans le système et leurs sorties, le dispositif de contrôleur peut déterminer les interconnexions possibles du dispositif de contrôleur et des autres dispositifs pour former le système et présenter à l'utilisateur des recommandations ou des instructions sur la manière d'interconnecter les dispositifs. Cette fonctionnalité est appelée assistant.
