Abstract

The valve element includes a base layer having an aperture disposed there-through and a flexible top layer overlaying and joined to the base layer so as to cover the aperture. The base layer and top layer are further joined so as to provide an expandable and collapsible channel between the aperture and an exit point on the valve element. In its normal condition, to seal closed the valve element, the channel is collapsed and the base and top layer adjacent one- another. To facilitate sealing of the valve element, a semi-rigid sealant material is provided in the channel in sealing contact with the base layer and the top layer. In operation, air entering the aperture displaces the top layer and expands the channel, allowing the air to pass across the semi- solid sealant material and into the environment. The valve element may be used with storage containers, such as food storage bags.
