Abstract

The invention relates to an additive for addition to a product which otherwise is harmful to skin, comprising a carrier and at least a protein fraction, the arrangement being such that the additive is adapted to become an integral part of the product whereby to obviate or reduce any said harmful effect. In a particular embodiment, the additive will have a formulation for use with a cement slurry which includes propylene glycol, aloe vera, disodium hydrogen phosphate, citric acid, gelatin and potassium sobate. When the additive is added to a cement slurry, for example, the protein fraction provides protein to protein attachment to provide a layer of protective protein on the skin. The protein combines with the plant acids provided by the other constituents to provide a complex which is preferentially attracted to the skin of a user if it comes into contact therewith and provides a barrier which obviates or reduces harmful effects on the skin such as burns, leathery skin or other conditions. When the protein layer is damaged by abrasion by the cement and/or sand, the protein to protein attachment renews the protein layer, thus preventing contact of the harmful constituents of the product with the skin.

Description

SKIN PROTECTION
The invention relates to skin protection, particularly to protection of the skin when it comes into contact, inadvertently or otherwise, with a product which can have a potentially harmful effect on the skin of a user.
Cement is, as is well known, a product which is used extensively in the building industry. Cement with a high lime content is also being currently promoted as a useful product. Traditional cement or such with a high lime content can have a deleterious effect on human or animal skin when skin comes into contact with it.
Thus cement, whether in the form of a powder or particularly a slurry, can cause burns and create a leathery or other skin condition. This is particularly so with the hands of a worker in the building industry, though the harmful effects is not confined to the skin of the hands.
It is an object of the invention to seek to mitigate the potentially harmful effects of contact of a product with skin.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided an additive for addition to a product which otherwise is harmful to skin, comprising a carrier and at least a protein fraction, the arrangement being such that the additive is adapted to become an integral part of the product whereby to obviate or reduce any said harmful effect.
The carrier may suitably comprise water.
The protein fraction may comprise gelatin. The protein fraction may also or alternatively comprise soya protein and/or derivatives thereof.
Further, the protein fraction may comprise collagen and/or derivatives thereof.
The additive may also comprise one or more of propylene glycol, aloe vera, disodium hydrogen phosphate, citric acid and potassium sobate.
Suitably the additive may comprise gelatin or collagen, propylene glycol, aloe vera, disodium hydrogen phosphate, citric acid, and potassium sobate.
The additive may further comprise a preservative, and/or saponin and/or derivatives thereof.
The additive may further comprise a fluidiser adapted to enhance flow characteristics of a product.
Moreover, the additive may further comprise an ingredient which effects curing of a curable or settable product.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a product including an additive as hereinbefore defined.
The product may comprise a cement, suitably a cement or cementitious slurry.
The cement or slurry may comprise a high lime content.
In a preferred embodiment, the product to which the additive is added is cement or a cement or cementitious slurry, particularly such a cement product having a high lime content. Insofar as such a cement product may have a variety of formulations and/or strengths, an additive embodying the invention may have a specific formulation which may be specifically adapted to a particular product to which it is added.
EXAMPLE
In general, the additive will have a formulation for use with a cement slurry which includes propylene glycol, aloe vera, disodium hydrogen phosphate, citric acid, gelatin and potassium sobate.
In another Example, the gelatin is replaced by collagen.
In a preferred Example, the protein fraction is soya protein, fish protein or vegetable protein, singly or in a desired combination.
In use, when the additive is added to a cement slurry, for example, the protein fraction provides protein to protein attachment to provide a layer of protective protein on the skin.
Moreover, the additive does not have any detrimental effect on the properties of cement mixes to which it is added, for example there is no detrimental effect on the strength or quality of the cement product. Substances such as fluidisers to improve flow characteristics of cement product(s) can also be incorporated in the additive, as can substances to improve temperature stability for work in cold ambient conditions, and to retard or accelerate setting or curing of the cement product as necessary or desirable.
An additive embodying the invention is thus adapted to alleviate the effect of a cement product such as a slurry on human skin tissue and as such comprises an epidermically effective additive owing to the protein factor.
