Abstract

The invention relates to an unauthorised recording prevention system which includes at least one illumination device locatable near a screen on which a film is depicted, the illumination device emitting a light in at least one direction which is invisible to the human eye, but is detectable by a recording device, and which creates a distortion on the recording device should an attempt be made to record the film.

Description

BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
[001] The movie industry is losing in the excess of US$ 4 billion per annum in lost revenues to piracy.
[002] Various methods such as technologies for digital projectors to watermarking have been pursued to track down the origins of pirated films. Another method includes the installation of metal detectors to prevent the audience from entering a cinema with a digital or the like recording device. However, none of these systems renders recording devices known in the art useless as these recording devices may in some instances be extremely small or undetectable.
[003] It has become common practice for video material pirates to copy video material inside a cinema by filming a new release and then mass producing low-cost DVD's which are sold on the black market.
[004] Pirating in this manner is not only a distortion of the original picture but an illegal practice and should be prevented.
[005] In this specification the word "Angstroms" is the unit normally associated with the measuring of wavelengths. "Angstroms" is a unit of measure equal to 1 hundred- millionth of a centimetre. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[006] The invention provides for an unauthorised recording prevention system which includes at least one illumination device locatable near a screen on which a film is depicted, the illumination device emitting a light in at least one direction which is invisible to the human eye but which is detectable by, and which creates a distortion on a recording device.
[007] The illumination device may be capable to transmit light with a wavelength of between 106 - 7 000 Angstroms.
[008] The illumination device may be positioned behind the screen alternatively it may be positioned between the screen and an audience.
[009] A plurality of illumination devices may be utilised.
[0010] The illumination device may include a filter to refract the light emitted therefrom and to create an "invisible curtain".
[0011] The light emitted from the illumination device may be directed at the audience alternatively it may be directed across the screen.
[0012] The recording device may be any digital recorder such as a silicone (charged coupled device) CCD based digital camera recorder known in the art.
[0013] The distortion may be a "wash out effect" created on the recorded copy, alternatively it may be a warning signal or a complete shutdown of a projector device. [0014] The invention further extends to a method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films which method include the steps of positioning at least one light illumination device near a screen on which a film is depicted and emitting a light from the illumination device having a wavelength which is invisible to the human eye but which is detectable by, and which creates distortion on a recording device.
[0015] The method may further include the steps of positioning the illumination device behind the screen, alternatively positioning the illumination device between the screen and an audience.
[0016] The light emitted from the illumination device may be directed towards the audience alternatively it may be directed across the screen on which the film is depicted.
[0017] The wavelength of the light emitted from the illumination device may be of any suitable length which is undetectable by the human eye but may preferably be between 106 - 7 000 Angstroms.
[0018] A plurality of the illumination devices may be utilised.
[0019] The illumination device may include a filter to refract the light emitted therefrom and to create an "invisible curtain".
[0020] The distortion may be a "wash out effect", alternatively it may be a warning signal or a complete shutdown of a projector device.
[0021] The recording device may be any digital recorder such as a silicone (charged coupled device) CCD based digital camera recorder known in the art. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0022] The invention is further described by way of examples with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein
Fig 1 is a plan view of a cinema where a plurality of illumination devices are positioned between a screen and an audience; and Fig 2 is a plan view of a cinema where the plurality of illumination devices are positioned behind the screen.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0023] Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings illustrates a cinema 10 having a screen 12 on which a new released film is depicted via a projector 14. An audience 16, facing the screen12, is positioned between the projector 14 and the screen 12. A plurality of illumination devices 18 are positioned between the screen 12 and the audience 16, along the side walls of the cinema 10.
[0024] Each illumination device 18 emits a light ray 20 with a wavelength of between 106 - 7000 Angstroms which is equal to that of infrared light. Each illumination device 18 include a filter (not shown) which refracts the light 20 into multiple light rays. Each filter is positioned so that an "invisible curtain" 21 is created between the screen 12 and the audience 16.
[0025] It is well-known that light with a wavelength of between 4000 - 7000 Angstroms is detectable by the human eye whereas light with an alternative wavelength is undetectable by the human eye. However, certain light wavelengths which is undetectable by the human eye is detectable by various recording devices such as digital or the like camera recorders.
[0026] An offender 22 forming part of the audience 16, who attempts to record the new released film depicted on the screen 12 with a recording device 24, will not be able to see the "invisible curtain" effect created by the plurality of illumination devices 18. However most recording devices 24 will detect the "invisible curtain" thus distorting the recorded image.
[0027] The distortion created on the recorded image has a "wash out" effect which ensures that only part of the image is recorded, alternatively that nothing of the image is recorded.
[0028] Figure 2 illustrates an alternative embodiment of the invention 10A wherein a plurality of illumination devices 30 are position behind a screen 32 of which each illumination device 30 emits at least one light ray 34.
[0029] Each illumination device 30 includes a filter (not shown) which refracts the light rays 34. The screen 32 having multiple apertures 36 therein acts as a second filter directing the emitted light at an audience 38, who is facing the screen 32.
[0030] An offender 40 in the audience 38, who attempts to record the new released film on a recording device 42, such as a digital or like camera recorder, will be unable to detect the multiple rays 44 of light which are directed at him as the wavelengths of these light rays are of such a nature that it is undetectable by the human eye.
[0031] However, the wavelengths of the light rays 44 are detectable by the digital or like camera recorder and consequently will distort the recorded image.
[0032] The distortion created on the recorded image is a "wash out" effect. Hence, only part of the image is recorded and in certain instances no image is recorded.
[0033] The distortion created may also be a warning signal alternatively it may be a complete shutdown of a projector.
[0034] It should be noted that many embodiments may exist which will fall within the scope of the current invention. For example, the illumination devices may be positioned along the floor of the cinema alternatively along the roof of the cinema. Also, the filters used in combination with the illumination devices may be of any suitable kind to create various "invisible curtains".

Claims

1. An unauthorised recording prevention system which includes at least one illumination device beatable near a screen on which a film is depicted, the illumination device emitting a light in at least one direction which is invisible to the human eye, but which is detectable by and creates a distortion on a recording device.
2. An unauthorised recording prevention system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the illumination device is capable to transmit light with a wavelength which is undetectable by the human eye.
3. An unauthorised recording prevention system as claimed in claim 2 wherein the wavelength of the emitted light is between 106 - 7 000 Angstroms.
4. An unauthorised recording prevention system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the illumination device is positioned behind the screen.
5. An unauthorised recording prevention system as claimed in claim 4 wherein the illumination device is positioned between the screen and an audience.
6. An unauthorised recording prevention system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein a plurality of illumination devices are utilised.
7. An unauthorised recording prevention system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the illumination device includes a filter to refract the light emitted therefrom.
8. An unauthorised recording prevention system as claimed in claim 7 wherein the illumination device in combination with the filter creates an "invisible curtain".
9. An unauthorised recording prevention system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 8 wherein the light emitted from the illumination device is directed at the audience.
10. An unauthorised recording prevention system as claimed in claim 9 wherein the light emitted from the illumination device is directed across the screen.
11. An unauthorised recording prevention system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10 wherein the recording device is a digital recorder.
12. An unauthorised recording prevention system as claimed in claim 11 wherein the digital recorder is a (charged coupled device) CCD based digital camera recorder.
13. An unauthorised recording prevention system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 12 wherein the distortion is a "wash out" effect.
14. An unauthorised recording prevention system as claimed in claim 13 wherein the distortion is a warning signal.
15. An unauthorised recording prevention system as claimed in claims 13 to 14 wherein the distortion is a complete shutdown of a projector.
16. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films which method include the steps of positioning at least one light illumination device near a screen on which a film is depicted and emitting a light from the illumination device having a wavelength which is invisible to the human eye but which is detectable by and creates a distortion on a recording device.
17. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films as claimed in claim
16 which includes the step of positioning the illumination device behind the screen.
18. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films as claimed in claim
17 which includes the step of positioning the illumination device between the screen and an audience.
19. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films as claimed in any one of claims 16 to 18 wherein the light emitted from the illumination device is directed towards the audience.
20. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films as claimed in claim 19 wherein the light emitted from the illumination device is directed across the screen on which the film is depicted.
21. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films as claimed in any one of claims 16 to 20 wherein the wavelength of the light emitted from the illumination device is undetectable by the human eye.
22. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films as claimed in claim 21 wherein the wavelength of the light emitted from the illumination device is betweeniO6 - 7 000 Angstroms.
23. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films as claimed in claim any one of claims 16 to 22 wherein a plurality of illumination devices are utilised.
24. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films as claimed in any one of claims 16 to 23 wherein the illumination device includes a filter to refract the light emitted therefrom.
25. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films as claimed in claim 24 wherein the illumination device in combination with the filter creates an "invisible curtain".
26. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films as claimed in any one of claims 16 to 25 wherein the distortion is a "wash out" effect.
27. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films as claimed in claim 26 wherein the distortion is a warning signal.
28. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films as claimed in any one of claims 26 to 27 wherein the distortion is a complete shutdown of a projector device.
29. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films as claimed in any one of claims 16 to 28 wherein the recording device is any digital recorder.
30. A method of preventing the unauthorised copying of films as claimed in claim 29 wherein the digital recorder is a silicone (charged coupled device) CCD based digital camera recorder.
