Definitions
- the invention herein relates to pet carriers, especially for cats and small dogs which provides high visibility for and minimal distress to the pet upon entry and confinement therein.
- a collapsible pet carrier having two end frames, each end frame having a bottom and a top, and a top bar separating the tops of the two end frames, the top bar and two end frames defining the shape of the pet carrier.
- the pet carrier has an opaque flexible bottom panel that extends between the bottoms of the first and second end frames, and also extends between the portions of the end frames adjacent to the bottoms to form a perimeter base panel.
- An open mesh fabric is secured to top bar and to the upper portions of the end frames, extending therebetween to form side walls of the pet carrier and end walls of the pet carrier.
- a door opening is defined by a zipper deployed in one of the side walls.
- the pet carrier is characterized in that at least 75 percent, and preferably at least 80 percent, of the area above the perimeter base panel is comprised of open mesh, providing excellent outward visibility to a pet confined therein.
- the upper portions of the end frames are curved hoops and the top bar is deployed between the tops of the hoops of the two end frames.
- Handle means are mounted to the top bar.
- the zipper defining the door in a mesh side wall has its upper edge located near the top bar to provide a large, generally upwardly disposed door opening for loading and unloading pets.
- the invention is also carried out in a pet carrier having first and second end frames, each end frame having a substantially straight bottom and a curved hoop extending upwardly from the respective ends of the bottom and having a top spaced from and central to the bottom.
- a top bar has first and second ends respectively pivotally attached to the tops of the first and second end frames.
- a flexible opaque bottom panel extends between the bottoms of the first and second end frames and extends upwardly along portions of the curved hoops near said bottoms to form a perimeter base panel.
- the perimeter base panel has first and second side edges extending between the curved hoops, and first and second end edges respectively extending between the hoops of the first and second end frames, generally parallel to the bottoms thereof.
- First and second flexible mesh end panels are respectively attached along the curved hoops of the first and second end frames and are secured to the respective first and second end edges of the perimeter base panel to close the area defined by the end frames.
- First and second flexible mesh side panels are attached to the top bar and along the curved hoops of the first and second end frames, each side panel extending between the curved hoops of the first and second end frames and from the top bar to near the bottoms of the first and second end frames, where the mesh side panels are respectively secured to the first and second side edges of the perimeter base panel.
- a zipper is deployed in the first flexible mesh side panel to define a door opening. The zipper extends from the first side edge of the perimeter base panel along the curved hoop of the first end frame, thereafter curves to extend along an upper edge parallel to and spaced from the top bar, and thereafter curves to extend along the curved hoop of the second end frame, ending at the first side edge of the perimeter base panel.
- a rectangular substantially stiff bottom board is removably adjacent the opaque bottom panel and extends between the bottoms of the end frames to space the end frames and maintain the pet carrier in an upright, full volume position.
- the pet carrier provides, with the exception of the bottom panel, the perimeter base panel, the top bar, the first and second end frames and zipper, a total mesh full view enclosure for the pet.
- a handle may be mounted to the top bar.
- the zipper is deployed substantially adjacent the curved hoops of the end frames to maximize the width of the door opening. Also, the zipper is deployed near the top bar to maximize the height of the door opening.
- the zipper may be deployed with its upper edge within approximately three inches of the top center of the end frames, and preferably within approximately two inches of the top center of the end frames.
- the proximity to the top bar may also be expressed by an angle A between a horizontal line and a line tangent to the curved hoop of an end frame taken at a point aligned with the upper edge of the zipper, the angle A being less than 21 degrees and preferably about 12 degrees.
- a pad is provided atop the substantially stiff bottom panel, and the top bar detachable mounts a shoulder strap.

- a pet carrier 10 is illustrated in the various figures and generally includes an opaque woven bottom panel 12, first and second mesh end panels 14 and 16, and first and second mesh side panels 18 and 20.
- the bottom panel, end panels and side panels are supported on end frames 26 and 28 that are connected by a top bar 30.
- Side panel 18 has a zipper 32 deployed therein, which may be opened to form a door
- End frame 26 also sometimes referred to as perimeter end frame 26 because it defines the outside of an end of the pet carrier 10, has a substantially straight bottom 40 and an upper portion in the form of a curved hoop 42 extending from respective ends of the bottom and having a top 44 which is spaced upwardly from and centrally with respect to the bottom 40.
- the curved hoop shown is a preferred shape, it will be recognized that other curved hoop shapes may also be utilized and that the curved hoop may or may not include some straight portions.
- the end frame 26 is formed of bent spring metal rod and has mesh end panel 14 and mesh side panel 18 secured thereto, as more fully discussed below.
- the other end frame 28 is substantially the same as end frame 26, having a bottom 46 and an upper portion in the form of a curved hoop 48 with a central top 50.
- the top bar 30 is an elongated rectangular substantially rigid piece, which is formed of ribbed metal covered by fabric as shown in Fig. 7 and discussed more fully below, but can also be formed of fiberglass or even wood. It has first and second ends 52 and 54 that are respectively pivotally connected to the end frames 26 and 28 at the tops 44 and 50 thereof .
- the pivotal connection between the top bar 30 and the end frames 26 and 28, shown in Fig. 6 discussed more fully below, permits the pet carrier 10 to fold to the flattened condition illustrated in Fig. 4 for storage or for packing in the trunk of a car.
- the top bar 30 has a handle 60 attached thereto midway between its ends 52 and 54.
- the top bar 30 also has "D" rings 64 and 65 for removably attaching a shoulder strap 62, which has snap end fittings. These provide for carrying the pet carrier 10.
- the bottom panel 12 of the pet carrier 10 is fabricated of a woven opaque fabric, such as waterproof canvas, nylon or another synthetic wate ⁇ roof fabric that is washable.
- the bottom panel 12 extends between the bottom 40 of end frame 26 and bottom 46 of end frame 28.
- the bottom panel extends upwardly from the bottom 40 of the end frame, along a curved transition to curved hoop 42, to an end edge 68, which is approximately two to four inches above the bottom 40.
- the bottom panel 12 also extends upwardly to first and second side edges 72 and 74 extending between the end frames 26 and 28, also at a height of two to four inches above bottoms 40, 46 so that the pet's visibility is not blocked. It will be noted that the transition from the bottoms of the end frames to the hoops of the end frames is radiused, and the end edges 68, 70 and side edges 72, 74 are located at or slightly above the radiused transition.
- the upwardly extending portions of the bottom panel 12 form a perimeter base panel 75 of low height that does not block the pet' s vision, but is functional in providing a durable surface with respect to pets' paws and also in containing any pet urination, etc.
- This perimeter base panel 75 has upper edges 68, 70, 72 and 74, and its height of two to four inches may be measured with per carrier 10 sitting on a flat floor or table.
- the mesh end panel 14 spans the area within the curved hoop 42 of end frame
- the mesh end panel 16 similarly spans the area within the curved hoop 48 of end frame 28, and is attached to the end edge 70 of the bottom panel 12 and perimeter base panel 75.
- Mesh side panel 20 extends from the top bar 30 to the side edge 72 of bottom 12 and perimeter base panel 75, where it is attached. It also is attached to and extends laterally between the portions of the curved hoops 42 and 48 leading from the top bar 30 toward the bottoms 40 and 46.
- Mesh side panel 20 similarly extends from the top bar 30 to side edge 74 of the bottom panel 12 and perimeter base panel 75 to which it is attached, and is attached to and extends laterally between the curved hoops 42 and 48 of the end frames 26 and 28.
- the mesh material of the side panels may also extend across the bottom panel 12, providing an additional layer overlying the bottom panel 12.
- the mesh side panel 18 has a door opening 34 formed therein, the door opening being defined by the zipper 32.
- the closed zipper 32 is deployed having a first end 76 at the side edge 70 of the perimeter base panel 75 closely adjacent the curved hoop 42 of end frame 26 and the zipper extends upwardly from end 76 adjacent the curved hoop.
- the zipper 32 then has a radiused transition, generally indicated at 78, to an upper edge 80 which extends parallel to and near the top bar 30.
- the zipper 32 then has a radiused transition 82 and thereafter extends along and closely adjacent the curved hoop 48 of end frame 28 to zipper end 84.
- a door portion 36 of the mesh side panel 18 may be moved to the open position, shown in Fig. 2, providing a large and in part upwardly facing door opening 34 for loading and unloading a pet. It has been found that a large upwardly facing door opening facilitates loading a pet, including easing the apprehension and stress a pet exhibits upon being inserted into the confined interior of
- the pet carrier 10 further comprises a substantially rigid rectangular (except for radiused corners) bottom board 90 that is inserted through the door opening 34 to lie adjacent the bottom panel 12 and the mesh overlying the bottom panel 12 if the mesh is so continued.
- a pocket may be formed on the underside of the bottom panel 12 to receive the bottom board 90.
- the substantially rigid bottom board 90 extends between the bottoms 40 and 46 of the end frames 26 and 28, and thereby holds the pet carrier 10 in its upright, unfolded position.
- a pad 92 is preferably placed atop the bottom board 90, the pad being liquid absorbent and washable.
- the pad 92 provides comfort to a pet, and is easily cleaned in case the pet has a discharge of bodily fluids or wastes within the pet carrier 10.
- the bottom board 90 and pad 92 may be removed in order to fold the pet carrier 10 to the storage configuration shown in Fig. 4.
- the end frames 26, 28 are folded inwardly along to the top bar 30 and the bottom panel 12, being flexible, is folded or bunched adjacent the top bar 30.
- the pet carrier 10 may be provided in a variety of sizes, and "small,” “medium” and “large” sizes as set forth below are convenient and useful for most pets of a size and weight that the pet owner would consider carrying. With reference to
- the "small” size may have a length L of about 17", a width W of about 13" and a height H of about 9", adapting it to fit under an airline seat as carry-on luggage.
- the "medium” size may have a length L of about 18", a width W of 14-1/2" and a height H of about 14-1/2".
- the “large” size may have a length L of about 24", a width W of about 16-1/2" and a height H of about 16-1/2".
- the pet carrier 10 shown in the drawings is a "medium” size. The location of the upper edge 80 of the zipper 32 and the door opening 34 it defines has been described above as being “near" the top bar 30. With reference to Fig.
- the location of the upper edge 80 of zipper 32 defining the door opening is illustrated in an end view of the pet carrier 10.
- the top bar 30 is 2" wide, whereby the upper edge 80 of the zipper 32 may be as close as about 1-1/4 to 1-1/2" from the top center of the end frames.
- the upper edge of the door opening is "near” the top bar in that it is separated from the top center by a distance D of approximately two inches and is therefore separated from the top bar by about one inch. It is also illustrated as being “near” the top bar in that a tangent to the curved hoop 42 of end frame 36 taken at the upper edge 80 of the zipper positioned at an angle A of about 12 degrees to a horizontal reference line. This provides a wide, upwardly facing door opening 34.
- Such a door opening is also achieved when the top edge 80 of the zipper is within about 2 to 2-1/2" of the top bar 30, or within distance D' 3 to 3-1/2" of the center of the top bar, for all of the sizes of pet carrier set forth above.
- the target may define an angle A' of about 21 degrees or less, for all of the sizes of pet carrier set forth above.
- the pet carrier 10 also has substantially unimpeded outward visibility due to the attachment of the mesh forming the end panels 14, 16 and side panels 18, 20 to the curved hoop portions 42, 48 of the end frames 26, 28.
- the "small” size pet carrier has over 85% visibility through mesh above the perimeter base panel 75.
- the “large” size has over 90% outward visibility above the base panel 75, again taking into account the top bar, mesh to frame attachment and zipper.
- the perimeter base panel 75 does not block the pet's visibility, but is useful for the durability of the pet carrier, and the top bar 30 does not block perimeter visibility.
- the pet has virtually 360 degrees clear visibility in the upper portions of the pet carrier, blocked only by the end frames and zipper.
- Figures 5-7 show preferred structural details of the pet carrier 10.
- Fig. 5 illustrates the attachment of mesh end panel 16 and side mesh panel 18 to the end frame 26.
- end frame 26 is metal spring wire, and it is covered with a vinyl wrap 100 having legs 102, 104.
- the marginal edge 106 of mesh end panel 16 is positioned adjacent leg 102, and marginal edge 108 of mesh side panel 18 is positioned adjacent leg 104.
- a cloth tape 110 embraces the marginal edges 106, 108 and legs 102, 104 and stitching 112 is applied to complete the attachment.
- the attachment is about 1/2" wide, and therefore has a minimal effect on outward visibility.
- the top bar 30 is a metal strip with strengthening ribs 114, 115 formed thereon.
- the metal strip is covered by a fabric sheath 116, so that the metal is not exposed.
- a nylon fabric strap 118 is placed atop the fabric sheath, and captures mesh therebetween to attach the side panels 18, 20 to the top bar.
- Fig. 7 also shows D-ring 62 with its strap 120 folded into layers 122, 124 that are riveted to the top bar 30.
- Fig. 6 shows the hinge connection between the top bar 30 and the end frame 26.
- the end frame 26 has a vinyl cover 100 with legs 102 and 104.
- the two layers 122, 124 of the D-ring strap are positioned adjacent to leg 102, and the marginal edge of the end panel 14 is positioned adjacent leg 104.
- the nylon strap 118 overlies both the layers 122, 124 of the D-ring strap and the marginal end of the mesh end panel 16.
- the marginal edge of the mesh of the side panels is also stacked above leg 102, and the tape 110 is fitted about the foregoing layers.
- the nylon strap is folded back to overlie the tape 110 and all of the foregoing are stitched. Thereafter, the nylon strap is returned under the top bar 30, and rivet 130 secures the D-ring strap and nylon strap.
- This provides a strong, yet flexible pivotal connection between the top bar and end frame 26 and a similar pivotal connection is provided to end frame 28.
- the mesh used in making the pet carrier 10 is sold by Thanachokplastics Co., Ltd., product no. P 13 BL. It has generally rectangular mesh openings that are about 1/8" on each side.
- the material of the bottom panel is made of the same company, model no. TE 2.5 M/M. Other similar materials may be used. Therefore, a pet carrier has been described that admirably achieves the objects of the invention. It will be appreciated that the preferred embodiment described is illustrative only and that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit and the scope
