Abstract

A network control apparatus for controlling via a first network a media storage device, and a network control apparatus for remotely monitoring such a device. Timecode information from the media storage device is sampled, and output via the network such that not all stored timecode information produced is output. An indication of the rate of change of timecode is also output. The remote monitoring apparatus receives timecode information and rate of change information and derives reconstructed timecode information. The invention is applicable to remote operation of a VTR or VTRs over a network, for example for archiving in a media production application.
