Definitions

  • the present invention is generally directed to anti-theft systems for use in the retail and rental industries, and in particular to an anti-theft system for recorded video, audio or software mediums.
  • an anti-theft system for recorded video, audio or software mediums.
  • An electronic tag is usually provided on the security frame for this purpose. While this measure is more effective than the previously described theft prevention arrangements, it requires the store to hold a large number of the security frames and requires store personnel to load each case individually within such a security frame. This can add significantly to the overall running costs of the store. Also, these frames are relatively bulky and restrict the amount of product that can be displayed at any one time within the store.
  • the video rental industry is now also moving towards the rental of DVD video discs. These discs can be removed from the original cases and stored behind the counter. It would however be more convenient to leave the disc within the casing on the store shelf to eliminate the need to provide further storage provisions for the discs and to avoid the need for staff to have to locate the required disc from storage. The likelihood of theft of the disc is however greater because the customers will have access to the discs prior to rental.
