Abstract

A method is disclosed to estimate channel parameters like the raw channel bit error rate (CER), the word error rate (WER) or the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in a communication system. To this purpose, the received signal (10) is decoded (12) and the reliability of the decoded data is checked (16) by means such as a CRC algorithm. If the check is successful, the data is re-encoded (20) and compared (14) with original received sequence (10). The CER or the SNR can be determined. Since there is a one-to-one relation between the CER and the SNR, one value can be determined from the other value. Moreover, since the relation between the SNR or the CER at the input and the WER at the output of the decoder is known, the WER can be determined from the SNR or the CER. The use of look-up tables is disclosed to map each of the values into the other.
