Abstract

Die Erfindung betrifft eine Brennstoffzelle, bei der die mangelnde katalytische Wirkung der Elektrokatalysatoren, insbesondere der Kathode, vorteilhaft verringert wird, und so eine erhöhte Leistung der Brennstoffzelle erzielt wird. Dazu wird der Kathode der Brennstoffzelle während des Betriebs ein positiver Spannungs- bzw. Strompuls aufgegeben. Dies führt vorteilhaft zu einem sofort eintretenden Reinigungseffekt, der den Katalysator der Kathode von deaktivierenden Adsorbaten, wie beispielsweise CO oder Methanol befreit. Vorteilhaft wird dieser Strom- bzw. Spannungspuls mehrfach, insbesondere periodisch auf die Kathode aufgegeben. Trotz des dazu notwendigen Stromverbrauchs wird durch dieses Verfahren insgesamt eine Leistungsverbesserung der Brennstoffzelle erzielt.
