Abstract

A method of discharging ash from a gasifier (12) includes discharging hot ash from a gasification chamber (34) of the gasifier (12), through an ash discharge opening in or adjacent a floor of the gasifier (12), into an ash chamber (40). The hot ash is allowed to mix with a carrier liquid in the ash chamber (40) and an ash/carrier liquid mixture is withdrawn from the ash chamber.
